just the 7 worst foods to eat right now

don't go here

I love a tidy DYK (did you know) list. Especially if it’s an odd number of items (everyone compiles lists of 7 or 11 things, have you noticed?). I’ve been talking about this list with people all weekend – what NOT to eat. If you want to live to see another day.

1. Canned Tomatoes

2. Corn-Fed Beef

3. Microwave Popcorn

4. Nonorganic Potatoes

5. Farmed Salmon

6. Milk Produced with Artificial Hormones

7. Conventional Apples

It seems like innocuous stuff. But it’s very innocuousness can leave you thinking, well, what the bloody hell am I meant to eat now if tinned tomatoes can kill me? The answer, as I’ve banged on about before, is to eat as close to the source as possible. Neat. Simple.

You’re kidding me? Not my precious microwave popcorn? Surely I don’t have to go back to making it in a pot? I’m don’t even think I know how.
Thanks for the heads up Sarah. Made my day.

  • Good gracious, what am I feeding my children? ….we live on apples although they would prefer to live on microwave popcorn…unfortunately or fortunately for them I can’t seem to even cook this without burning it!

Hey Sarah! Loooooove your column so I’m sooooo glad that you’re blogging now!

This post is scary! All these foods seem OK – well, maybe not the microwave popcorn! (It always tastes funny to me, so I don’t use it anyway.) And maybe not milk produced with artificial hormones – that can’t be good – but I thought they weren’t allowed to do that anyway???

    You learn something every day.

I just skimmed the article and it tells me that bottled past a sauce is better for me than tinned tomatos – surely I am better off making my own pasta sauce than getting one from a jar?

Sarah I love, love, love your column. I find it uncanny that you’re able to sum up all the random thoughts running through my mind in such an articulate way.

By sheer co-incidence I find myself reading your list while munching on an (unpeeled non-organic) apple. My kids have had an afterschool snack of milkshakes and microwave popcorn (a fun, new discovery). For dinner I was planning to serve the salmon cakes I made yesterday (using you guessed it – nonorganic potatoes and salmon (at least I used canned salmon).

My son however, has turned his nose up at this suggestion and requested his favourite pasta dish instead. I use Karen Martini’s delicious sauce recipe which includes half a can of tinned tomatoes!

I just cleared out my fridge and the veal mince (purchased from the supermarket – is it corn-fed?) has passed it’s use-by date so I fed it my grateful pug dog.

I find it funny that (supposedly) pesticide-ridden, commercially produced, genetically-bred variety of apples have been dubbed the “conventional ones” by the article your linked to. Does this mean my spotty little organic apples are therefore “unconventional”? :)

Glad to see that I can still used glassed in tomatoes though – I don’t know what I’d do without a bottle or two in my pantry, especially when tomatoes are well out of season!
