Sarah,

I've been reading and thoroughly enjoying your blog and Sunday Life articles for some time - mainly attracted initially by your thoughts on auto-immune disorders and hypothyroidism in particular. (I have an underactive thyroid and history of SLE). Thank-you for your interesting and insightful comments. In relation to this current story about germ phobia and the need to control the chaos in our lives I'm working on making simple achievable changes to my own space aided by a good friend who recently read the interesting book 'Slow Death by Rubber Duck". I haven't read the book myself as I fear it could possibly send me into foetal position and afraid to do anything (I tend to overreact to stresses in my life), however something as simple as replacing the kitchen and bathroom handwash (loaded with nasties) with a beautiful goat's milk soap in a pretty soapdish has brought me so much satisfaction that I now feel ready to move on to re-thinking shampoo/conditioner, soap powder etc. Basic stuff I know, but it can make such a difference.

[...] * I don’t fret about where I do it. I do it on planes, in my office, in my car. In fact, the more “inappropriate” the place, the better. The slight discomfort makes me focus more. I’ve written about this before, the idea of finding happiness “in spite of” mess or pain or chaos. [...]

Sarah - you are so amazing, the only way that I can do that is if I don't think about it and just be 'present' and accepting to what's going on around me. It's totally calming and peaceful and I need to practice it more often especially when chaos arrives, it's automatic to resist and resistance is our 'enemy' per se.
As for the germ phobia, I totally agree with you on this and a few years ago a study was released in the UK about the increase in skin diseases (eczema, etc) as more and more products have come out for 'killing germs' and perfumed powders, gels, creams, etc the increase has matched the release of these products.
So yes, the more we tweak the more we have to continue to tweak, it's like the cane toads in QLD, they were bought in to kill off a bug (can't remember which one) and look at them, they're now out of control and are a pest themselves!
There are examples of it everywhere.

Hi Sarah, I came here via Sunday Life as your page has become the one I turn to first. I remember looking for a blog address and now it's there and now I'm here :)
I totally attribute my and my boys general health to being grubby! We don't live in a sty but I do pick up dropped food and eat it. I sterilize dummies, oh, maybe once a fortnight if that. My partner is Virgo so I let him do the freaking out (and the tidying up hehe) if the house gets too messy. We are never sick (touch wood!) and the gastro and lurgies seem to miss our household when they do the rounds.
We also all say WTF at the Glen 20 and Pine O clean ads where the (usually, actually no, ALWAYS) women spray or clean everything in sight. Way to promote obsessive compulsive disorder!

Not well! Although I do relish those moments in life when I am with others and they are more irritated by the messiness of the life experience then I am. At those times I sit back, go with the flow and hand the responsibility of making life perfect over to someone else!
