I am a 50 something male and have never driven a car in my life. I have never learned how and wouldn't even know how to start one - well I probably could, but certainly wouldn't know what to do next. Living proof that a car is not a necessity !!!
People often ask how I can get by without it, but "you don't miss what you have never known". My other thought is that the human race has been wandering the surface of this planet for hundreds of thousands of years. The car has been around for a little over 100 years - how did everybody else get by ????

It's great that you are promoting going car free, along with all the other great things you promote.

I didn't get a car until I was 33 and moved out of Sydney, but in Sydney I loved being car free. I never needed to join a gym with all the walking I did, not to mention the money I saved. It's also a very green thing to do.

Why did you go back to having a car?

I started walking 30 minutes a day about 2 years ago yo lose weight. Now that's all done I still walk every day (been 3 years now) as it's so addictive. Now I whiz past the shops at the same time and pick up groceries. You just see so much more when you walk - and it's SLOW so you take things in.

It's the meditative quality of walking and how it lets your mind unravel after a tough day. I can't recommend it highly enough - the mental benefits far outweigh the physical. I really look forward to it everyday now and get ansy if I miss more than a day or so.

The best thing about not having the car to do groceries is to take a backpack, and you buy enough things that you can comfortably carry home. If it's too heavy, it could mean you've bought too much food (which potentially could be thrown out to landfill anyways)...

Food for thought. :)
