I got close to Justine Bieber this morning. How close? This close:
Close enough to get what the screaming thousands of teen girls outside the Sunrise studio (where I was filming this am) are on about. He sells happy and fresh and clarity and unadulterated. And I bought it.
That’s what happens when you’re discovered overnight and there hasn’t been enough time for your enthusiasm to be watered down. In myyyyyy daaaaaay, you had to play in the garage a few years, graduate to the pub circuit, hope a scout from Stock Aitken and Waterman passes by, negotiate a deal and get a T-shirt line printed. Then maybe get a record released in three Christmas’ time. By which time, your zeal has been zipped a little. You’re 25 and a little hardened and cynical and compromised.
Justin has bypassed this due to the wonders of the inter-web. And his energy is clear and pure as a result. I watched him calling shots with the adults around him (including his mum who looks about 17). He wanted the show to go on, despite what the police said about security issues. He wanted to shout out to the crowds outside, despite Seven security worrying the hormonal mob would smash the windows in.
Un-adult-erated.
All us adults watched on, astounded. How amazing would it be to push your vision as far as you could without being touched by cluttery grown-up compromise.

Ok I’m with you on energy bit, but oh baby baby baby… it’s mindless dribble. Kids are great mimics and Biebs with his whiffy me to, man child lyrics and ripped off riffs is obviously lacking parental supervision and direction as was the crowd today. Weller started The Jam when he was 14 and is still leaving substance. Let’s see how long this kid hangs around after his onions drop. Even Hanson (sorry Paul) in their youth makes Bieber look a bit light (by the way, they’re still around). I’m “so just” wanting to take to his fringe with blunt scissors and see what’s left after half his act has been taken away. Soz Sass I was mid Biebs rant when I came across your post. I’m loving everything else- carry on.

I like Bieber. i think we need a new little boy crush….I think it is part of being a teeny girl to have a tragic crush or guilty pleasure- whether you grew up with the beetles, hanson, micky j, or in my case aaron carter, we love to chase a hollywood (or canadian in this case) hotty! hahha! I feel sorry for all the fans that missed his concert, but seriously, if he had of performed he would have been totally squished!

In the immortal words of The Joker…why so serious beggsy??
Who cares if it’s “mindless?” I LIKE the song, it’s catchy and it makes me happy. And besides Justin is an adorable kid =)

Am I the only person who doesn’t have a clue who this kid is? And, on a somewhat deeper note, does the reaction from teenage girls regarding some no mark kid from across the pond not raise questions over the true equality of the genders. Boys of a similar age are “finding themselves” and huddling in darkened corners bent over their laptops looking at what could be constituted as demeaning images of women whereas girls declare their undying love and wave banners saying “marry me”. Is one not the oppressor and the other the oppressed?
