how bad is flouride, really?

Posted on May 25th, 2010

A few weeks back I posted about why I don’t drink bottled water. Happily it inspired a stack of people to reconsider their habits.

If you’re not yet convinced, watch this Story of Stuff video (it’s a little long, but fascinating) below. And then scroll down to some info on the effects of flouride, especially for anyone with thyroid issues. A number of readers highlighted that it was an issue (thanks!), so I get Angela Hywood to give her thoughts.

Angela’s thoughts on flouride and thyroid:

I  filter my tap water. Religiously! Tap water contains some industrial waste, pharmaceutical drug residue (YES!!), heavy metals, bacteria, chlorine, fluoride and the list goes on and stacks up to a toxic cocktail.
You can buy simple effective cheap water filters that effectively filter 85% of the junk, leaving clean healthy water. I use this one.

For those Hypothyroid and Hashimoto’s people Fluoride and Chlorine are to avoided where possible. These chemicals are directly liked to thyroid disease as it seriously depletes your iodine levels and damages your thyroid tissue. For more check out this article that asks if tap water is killing your thyroid, and this one on flouride and thyroid.

You should also be thinking about using a fluoride free toothpaste and mouthwash. Don’t worry you get plenty of natural fluoride for dental health through vegetable and fruit. Ask any Holistic Dentist and they will tell you the same thing!
I can highly recommend this great holistic dentist office if you looking for someone who cares about your health as well as your teeth!

Also, Richard, a reader, submitted this from flouridealert: There is also significant evidence that fluorine contributes to the calcification of the human pineal gland in the brain, responsible for the regulation of melatonin (sleep/hormone/randy-ness regulator) and N,N-dimethyltryptamine (naturally occuring psychedelic present in almost all flora and fauna).

My mate Gez, also got fired up about the subject and alerted me to a few links you might be interested in:

This anti-flouride link might interest. And this one.

Or this water site, that states the below:

  • No studies in Australia have proven that fluoridation is perfectly safe for all people.
  • Fluoride is a poison that accumulates in your body and one-third of a teaspoonful of sodium fluoride is estimated to be a lethal dose.
  • There has been no clinical research which proves fluoride stops dental caries, only clever and persistent propaganda.

    This is very interesting.
The gastro pub I worked in would refill glass bottles and stick them in the fridge to encourage people to opt for tap water. In fact, when asked for bottled water we were told to tell the customer to save their money.

  • Interesting post. Couldn’t agree more with you about not drinking bottled water. The comments from about Fluoride in the bottom half of your post are a little wide of the mark however. No clinical research showing fluoride stops dental caries? How about these…
The Cochrane Collaboration (one of the world’s most respected repositories of evidence based medical research) has these 2 systematic reviews:
    http://www.mrw.interscience.wiley.com/cochrane/clsysrev/articles/CD007868/frame.html
    http://www.mrw.interscience.wiley.com/cochrane/clsysrev/articles/CD002284/frame.html
Here’s another meta-analysis from a peer reviewed journal:
    http://jdr.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/86/5/410
Here’s the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council Statement on their review of the evidence for fluoridation:
    http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/_files_nhmrc/file/media/media/rel07/Fluoride_Flyer.pdf
    and here’s their full report:
    http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/publications/synopses/eh41syn.htm.
All of the above support fluoridation for prevention of dental caries, and I think it is a little harsh to write it off as “propaganda”

The NHMRC report addresses some of the issues raised in one of the above links re: making up baby bottles with tap water, so may be worth a read. I didn’t look for answers to some of the other issues one of the links raised (and I’m not making this up – follow the link under “and this one”), such as problems with the illuminati who are running the world:
    http://members.iimetro.com.au/~hubbca/illuminati.htm
or concerns about the New World Order:

    Hello from Brazil, Sarah.
What about the fluoride in the water?
Fluoride is also toxic and us delivered to bottled and tap water worldwide. In Brazil, all tap and bottled water contains fluoride.
