The below popped up on Mumbrella today. If you’re in media, or interested in media, you should definitely subscribe the newsletter. Apart from anything else, Tim Burrows, who runs the site, is one of the industry’s good guys. Knowledgeable, kind, fair, smart. He’s also a wonderful example of what I talk about in the clip – that the media landscape is shifting and media players are having to define their space themselves, creating their own platforms and products. It really is an exciting time to be in the game!
As an aside, it’s also the first time I’ve commented publicly on the MasterChef experience. Not sure how that one slipped out…

Can I just admit here that during the first season of masterchef (I havent watched this one) my friends and I were mentioning that we didn’t know what your role was, why you were there, or why you were saying things that could have easily been covered by the others. I’m relieved that you felt the same, but I still feel a little bad now about it!

oooh, don’t feel bad. Yes, it was difficult knowing everyone would be thinking, “what’s she doing there”. But my mum always said to hold your head high and things will land where they need to!

Interesting, I’ve always been curious to hear your thoughts about MasterChef but could understand your reluctance. I actually enjoyed your role in the show as it provided a buffer to the viewer so we weren’t over loaded with Garry and George (like we are in this season). Anyway what’s done is done. Keep up the great work with the blog, it’s a fascinating read.

[...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Brooke Hemphill and sarah wilson, Carmel Ruggeri. Carmel Ruggeri said: RT @_sarahwilson_: on being a "media whore" and a square peg in the Masterchef hole http://bit.ly/9CuyOr [...]
I have never watched MasterChef (despite being married to an excellent cook and a mother of an apprentice chef) but I did hear ‘talk’ about what part your role played in the show. One thing is for sure, EVERYONE says/said YOU are delightful!
It seems you have the right mix of intelligence, humour, warmth, gravitas and lightness and beauty to satisfy everyone!
SO… as trivial as this may seem… I think you should be the host of a show like Australia’s Next Top Model. As an ex editor you know what’s required, objectively speaking plus you’re used to dealing with younger people with an overdeveloped sense of entitlement and ego.
AND you are unashamedly comfortable in your skin.
I’m sure Sarah Murdoch is a wonderful person and she is certainly a very philanthropic being and tireless in her efforts to boost the profile of the charities she fronts, but as judgemental and fickle as this sounds, she ‘lost me’ [woah. big loss
] after her Womens Weekly cover.
Not the cover because that was great to see her 1 blemish and 2 freckles and 3 wrinkles, etc so big whup. This is how most of us lead our lives, without photohop.
It was during the press calls promoting the cover… it really really annoyed me to see this;
hypocrisy
What message is she sending here exactly?

Hey Dusk, thanks for the gee-up. Nah, commercial reality TV hosting isn’t my thing, really. Done it. Onwards, upwards.

only saying it as it is…some great stuff has come from this interview…I’ll have to fill you in…another ball in the air, another file to add to the portfolio.

Great interview Sarah, up front, honest and refreshing.
I completely understand what you mean by the balls in the air in the world of media at the moment, I think there’s a lot more judging ahead as more platforms come into play – but that’s what makes it all so exciting.
I look forward to seeing your columns translated to television on LIFESTYLE you next year and to hearing more about your book… a growing portfolio, I don’t know how you fit it all in!

Totally agree Amy, no one really knows what’s going to happen to media…but we can be sure of this: content will be king.

Sarah, i really prefer ‘media tart’ than your other term.

Sarah..wonderful that we can see you on your blog. You should do more of this – perhaps interview some of those people who help make life sweeter…be more of a chat I would think, comfy lounges & tea…
Great that it appears from your comment above that already other projects have come out of this gig…travel well…x

I agree, I’ve enjoyed Tim Burrowes’ stuff for some time now, he really does come across as an exceptionally pleasant person, which is not necessarily the norm in the Australian media. I’m a bit more cynical about the future of the industry, I don’t know that content will be king, but I do agree that things are at a pivotal stage right now and the smart journalists need to create their own brand to make a mark.
