tony abbott in true flight, as pursued by Kerry

Posted on May 18th, 2010

I really think everyone should watch this: Tony Abbott being called to account by the sublime Kerry O’Brien on the 7:30 Report. If you haven’t already. We have an election coming up. This performance is important to reflect on:

For a blow by blow account, Dave Penberthy at The Punch did  a neat job.

There are a few things about Tony Abbott that concern me. His thinking on climate change (he thinks it’s crap), abortion, RU486, industrial relations and the rest are closed-minded and limiting to the human spirit. He also strikes me as the affable Dad at the school fete turning sausages, rather than a politician.

His wear-his-heart-on-his-sleeve, can’t-help-but-blurt-what-I’m-thinking tendencies were briefly rather refreshing and a lot of left-leaning women I know fell for the charm of it all. But they’re starting to come across inappropriate. It’s like the barbecue Dad has been plonked in the wrong plot. Tony himself also has a demeanour about him that says, “I can’t quite believe I’m here…can you?!”. Followed by a belly laugh.

Which is what disturbs me the most. He just doesn’t seem to be taking this politics thing very seriously. I think he’s being caught out.

  • I watched this last night. I also caught Kevin Rudds “turn” last week. Both entertaining. I also enjoyed Dave Penberthy at The Punch take on it…& yes I tweeted as the action was taking place. Kerry was on fire. My friend @catmatson has labelled him the thinking woman’s crumpet in response to my excitement of seeing him in action interview Peter Holmes a Court for a business function. I once crossed paths in a cafe in the wonderful coastal village of Woolgoolga …I resisted the urge to rush over and ruin his breakfast and gush all over him (stay cool I kept saying to myself). Both leaders need to pull their socks up over the next couple of months….it disturbs me to see the standards of leadership so low and leaders walking away from what they believe in or not having the confidence to put it out there.

  • Mike says:

May be i’m living in the past, John howard cared about this country as a hole and made tuff decisions for the country as a hole and its economic future not a popularity contest trying to steel the lime light from young girls sailing achievements. Kerry o’brian gave Howard nothing but grief and labour party a good plug.
I think we need new leaders in both parties, federal and state.
I didn’t mean this blog to get political, just my views. Bring back john.
