stop. ask… what’s the most important thing?

Posted on October 25th, 2010

Just a thought for this morning. It’s an old Buddhist story. Of a student who asked his teacher, “What’s the most important thing?”

The wise old teacher replies, “The most important thing is asking what’s the most important thing”.

Asking is engaging, caring, being alive, diving in. Not really knowing for sure – having an inkling in your heart – is what keeps us connected to each other, I think.

What a lovely thought-provoking post of positivity and hope! I know that love is important, but I find that it has varying definitions and it can be fleeting. For me, I feel that Hope is the most important thing…it drives us to continue to move forward along an inspiring journey…hoping for better, hoping to do better, hoping to be more.

  • Asking questions is what fascinates me and connects me to what I do and who I do it with as a coach, facilitator and researcher…..the process of discovery. You pose a question that you do not know the answer to and then set out together to discover it.

    Cheers Grace!
On a sensible note, I actually think the question is too broad. It’s perhaps too hard to define what’s the most important thing overall. It’s perhaps best to ask yourself what is the most important things in different aspects of your life. For example, what’s the most important thing in your relationship, about living in this country, the relationship with your friends etc. But maybe the most important thing about life is life itself. Damn, now I’m even confused.

Wow, imagine how asking yourself this everyday would affect your approach to life! When I find myself getting angry, upset, down or confused, I actually do try to put things into perspective by asking myself this, and it helps. A lot.

That’s all great, but what about when you do jump in and take the bold step… and then find yourself still unemployed nearly two years later?

Then you ask again, desiderata. It’s just important to keep re-assessing. Things change, your circumstances, your income, your goals, your work. What’s the most important thing right now? Sometimes, that’s getting the money for groceries by Saturday, or being able to pay the electricity bill. Other times, it’s following your heart.

I recognise that it’s tough to get a job at the moment. There isn’t a lot available and what is available may not fit your skill set, or be appealing. I really hope that something comes up for you soon, and is everything you want.

I’ll keep you in my prayers.
