some pretty bike storage ideas
Personally, my bike comes with me everywhere. It travelled with me into the Apple store in Sydney the other day. The security beef looked after it for me. I bath it. What more can I say…
I’m often asked where I keep my bike at home. Most places I’ve lived, inside. Mostly for security. And rust. I found these lovely shots of bikes-as-interior-accessories the other day. Why not work them into your decor? You got any clever ideas? Send them in…

Bike Storage Racks by Chris Brigham

Hi Sarah, love these photo’s, great idea for storage and to get a gorgeous look! A quick question, when you add photo’s to your blogs, do you get them off the internet/google images? I would like to add more photo’s to my blogs http://www.blossom.net.n/blog, it gives them such a different feel! Your advice would be much appreciated

Would love to be able to take my bike more places, but still haven’t worked out the transport logistics. I drive a small hatchback (Golf) but no matter how hard I try, can’t fit my bike in the back (mountain bike). Can’t quite imagine driving around with it standing up on my roof (as people do) and if I attach it to the back of my car, would be likely to forget it’s there and do some major reverse parking damage.
Without having to buy a bigger car, does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Annie,
I have the same issue. I have a towbar rack for the family car but also drive an old classic Ford Cortina and can’t get roof racks for it so I’ve been looking at alternatives. I found this looking through some blogs http://www.seasucker.tv/ Its is a vacuum mount system that is easy to attach and detach and you can put the bike on the roof or on the back.
cheers Ben

Do you take the wheels off? I have a small hatch also and just put the back seats down & slip off the front wheel (I also have a bike rack but it’s quicker, easier and better security to stick the bike inside).

Annie, I have same feedback. Quick release the front wheel and put down the seat (again get a quick release for this). My bikes (and they’ve always been quite big) fit in my Astra hatch.

Oh wow, I never thought to take the wheels off! I always wondered how other people managed and the answer is now so obvious
. I was seriously ready to buy a new car just to ferry around a bike.
Thanks everyone for suggestions. There’s a lot to learn …..
Very cool photos. I hang my bike in the hallway – looks better than a picture.
Sorry, but I did have to laugh at your twitter comments. No more twitpics for you ever, then your next post contains a twitpic of yourself. LOL

This might be obvious to most bike owners, but how often should a bike be serviced? I bought mine 2nd hand just recently, and from what I can see it’s in good condition. What things should I look out for or should it have a regular check up like cars?

Tamsin, depends on how much you use your bike. I’d advise at least once a year for moderate use. I used to ride my bike approx 5 days a week, 25km a day and would get it serviced at least every 6 months – maybe in spring as your cycling ramps up and after summer when you might retire your bike. Look out for loose chains, gears not changing smoothly, worn down brake pads, loose brake cables and wheels that aren’t aligned.

I check the air in my bike’s tyres a lot more often than I do the ones on my car! Have you got a foot pump with a gauge? It does help to keep them at the right pressure. The other thing to keep a eye on it how dirty your chain is getting, the more often it is cleaned & oiled, the easier it is to maintain…but if you are going to pay someone else to do this then I guess that doesn’t matter so much! Enjoy your new bike

Hi Sarah,
I bathe my bike too. And I think it’s cool to make the bike part of your indoor environment when you’re not riding it. Here’s a few pictures of my bike in my home.

Thanks Sarah, I love this post! My bike lives inside my rather small house and I always mean to organize a stand or something to give it a proper home (especially after all the earthquakes when it has been toppled a few times).

wherever you store your bike outdoors make sure it is properly secure. at least spend 10% of the total value of your bike on a lock. so if your bike is $500 spend $50 on a lock. there needs to be more bike storage ideas for city commuting. one day i suppose, one day
