so, I’ve written a “I quit sugar” ebook…
* this post has been updated*
…and I thought I’d tell you about it in advance of it’s release in a few weeks. And to give you the chance to sign up to be alerted when it arrives.
Basically, because so many of you kept asking how I quit sugar eight months ago, I thought it best to put together a bit of a guide.
It’s one of those issues that just grabs at people. I think most of us know we eat too much of the white stuff…and we wish we didn’t…and we wish there was a short-cut, simple way to get on track…that wasn’t too painful. I get stopped at markets, at the bank, on planes, and am asked about how I quit.
It’s an issue that hurts people. I think everyone is very hard on themselves about how much of it they eat. And would like to be freed of the bind, even just for a while.
Anyway, I’ve spent several weeks (months?) writing up answers to everyone’s questions and compiling an 8-week program. I reckon it takes two months to quit, and there are specific steps that I took – after researching all the material – that make it effective and (relatively) smooth.
If you want, enter your email here and I’ll send you a little email alert when it lands.
(I promise your email won’t be used for anything else!)
And so…the I Quit Sugar ebook
It includes:
* an 8-week program with weekly things to do to get sugar out of your system, and that best beat cravings – both emotional and physical – and detox issues
* an overview of why quitting sugar is a good idea (the scientific explainers that you can hold up to your mates when they think your bonkers for even trying the idea out).
* a bunch of recipes and ideas for snacks – both “sweet” and otherwise
* tips on how to shop and read labels
* non-sugar breakfast ideas
* non-sugar ideas for kids
* a list of herbs and supplements to help you with cravings and withdrawal
* a shopping list of ingredients to have in your pantry ready for cravings and “treat” needs.
In the meantime, a little taste from the beginning of the book….

This is so exciting Sarah…inspired by your journey I quit sugar a month ago. I have to say I feel pretty fabulous, and an amazing clarity. Even a week in Bali, my second week in, didn’t get me back on the white stuff! Really enjoying “Eat yourself sexy”…your outfits are to die for.

Please put me down for the book. Thanks
[Reply]
I’m very excited to read this.
I have quit sugar a few times, but always seem to go back for a little dark chocolate, or a few dates after a couple of weeks. Not a major blow out by any means, but I’m love to hear your tips on kicking the habit for good. : )
After all, I feel amazing each time I quit, it’s incredible for the mind as well as the body.

Dying to read it
Thanks Sarah!
I would love to sit down with you and ask you a million questions!

Awesome! Love your work Sarah.
I’ve started a new project (launching on the 27th – hopefully) called ‘Think Beautiful’. It’s blogazine covering 5 main categories – mind, body, spirit, inspire and work. It’s totally a passion project and I’m funding it myself. Would love you to do a piece on quitting sugar. Shoot me a line if you are interested?
Loving Eat Yourself Sexy too!
[Reply]
Sarah, this sounds great. Thanks for sharing. I’d really love to be notified.
I think I consume sugar in the same way you did – ‘healthy’ versions. But because of reading your blog I have become more aware and will opt out of honey in my tea more often and perhaps treat myself every now and then to dark chocolate instead of nightly. I struggle with the fruit thing – I love a banana in my smoothie or poached apples on my porridge! I hope your book will help me take the leap to being more sugar free!
[Reply]
I can’t wait. Put my down for one!
[Reply]
Sounds exciting. I cut back on sugar a lot after reading Sweet Poison by David Gillespie. Now I’m interested in your journey!

I can’t wait to read this book! I recently found out gluten is now out of my diet and I seem to be replacing Gluten with sugar. Love your blog Sarah and Eat Yourself Sexy is a great show!
[Reply]
Like many others who have already commented I have tried to give up, but then drift right back to those healthy ‘sugars’ dark chocolate, the odd teaspoon of honey. It’s a slippery slope. Mix that in with perfectionist guilt – nightmare. Looking forward to the e-book.
[Reply]
Looking forward to reading this ebook, Sarah. Need more sugar free breakfast ideas.

I just want to give a shout out for oats groats! Sarah has mentioned them briefly before.
I like mine with raw milk or with natural yoghurt with LSA mix & psyllium husk. My bf has his with raw milk, raw cacao powder and a touch of stevia. It’s like cocoa pops for grown ups… without being nutritionally barren
They are hard to get hold of in shops but you can get them online from a few places in Aus.
[Reply]
I. Need. This. Please.
I hate how the white stuff gets a grip on me!! I need to end the relationship…pronto!!! Love love love your blog Sarah!!

All hail Sarah for being our trail blazer…
[Reply]
Yes Please!!!
I know I need to do this.
I have fluctuating energy levels, espeically now with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, and rely on sugar to pep me up…especially at work each morning and mid-afternoon. I am very keen to break the cycle, however my addicition with the stuff dates back to my early years.
Due to recently diagnosed Celiac and other identified food allergies, I have been able to successfully eliminate Gluten, Dairy and Eggs from my diet…..but can’t seem to kick the sweet poision!
[Reply]
yes! i really needed this, thank you
[Reply]
I just quit Tuesday this week! I’d LOVE the plan now, but will pretend I have some level of patience. But geez, I know I’m on the right track because I’ve felt so dreadful. Like I said on my blog last night, it can’t be good to continue to eat it when it feels this bad to quit. I mean, I wouldn’t feel this bad if I gave up lettuce!
Looking forward to it.
[Reply]
I have tried being off sugar for 2 weeks at a time and I notice the difference straight away. THough it is a battle. I love my sweets, but my wellbeing does suffer. I go through those moodswings and my skin gives away the telltale signs. Looking forward to the release of your e-book!! Thank you!

i got off sugar in February – after reading your first round of posts – and have been (mostly) sugar free since then. i noticed a huuuge difference, mostly in how bloated i was (face, stomach); how much sugar messed with my appetite (it would make my hunger seem insatiable); and also in my mood – i had no idea how snappy and cranky sugar made me! i think i’m a lot calmer now.
i was really strict for the first three months or so but since then i’ve had birthday cake on occasion, and actually I still eat a fair bit of fruit… i really believe in this whole ’cause’ though, and love talking to (interested) people about it.
it’s so great that you’ve written an eBook. i’m sure it will be a really accessible way for more people to explore this issue.
p.s. also enjoying EYS. i was spewing when i sat down to watch it yesterday afternoon because it hadn’t been recorded properly by foxtel, nooo! will be tuning in tonight, though.

[Reply]
Yes please! Looking forward to getting my sanity back and not relying on sugar to get through the day.
[Reply]
I am an interested sceptic… mainly because I tend to ascribe to the ‘all things in moderation’ view of the world! Also, can’t get my mind around the fact that you should eliminate all fruit from your diet – fruit & its associated fibre, vitamins & minerals is good for you, isn’t it? Isn’t it??! I am open minded though Sarah, so please include me in your distribution list, I look forward to being convinced!
PS Will Eat Yourself Sexy be available on DVD at some stage? We don’t have Foxtel so have resigned myself to missing the show as it airs, but wondered if I may eventually be able to borrow the DVD from my local library?!

My take on fruit is… yes, it has good stuff in it. Fibre, vitamins, etc. It also has bad stuff in it, ie fructose. Whether the good stuff outweighs the bad in your opinion, is up to your individual constitution and immune system, etc.
Another point is, that you can get all the nutrients in fruit from vegetables, usually in much higher quantities and without sugar. You dont NEED fruit, by any stretch, if you are eating enough veg.
[Reply]
September 10th, 2011 at 9:39 am
As someone who has fructose malabsorption I can assure you that various vegetables also contain fructose and certain sugars that also play havoc with the internal workings of the digestive system! You also have to watch the portion sizes of vegetables in this case too! Too much and you are in inner strife!
[Reply]
September 12th, 2011 at 9:29 pm
I agree with everything in moderation, but I think a big problem for us is that we as a culture don’t have any concept of what an appropriate amount is. We don’t need to have fruit every day. I have fruit about three times a week and that’s still far more than my body would have to process than if I had a cave-man diet. And it’s hard to think in those terms because we don’t live in caves anymore, but despite the fact that our lifestyles have changed, our bodies as an organism have not.
Basically I agree with Monkey Mia… we’re all a little bit different and we get to choose what we eat. But your body doesn’t need fruit.

Ohhh fabulous! Yes please! Great idea.
[Reply]
Hey Sarah
Congratulations!
I read David’s book a year ago and have been sugar free since.
Would be nice to enjoy the occassional piece of cake at a party but it’s too great a risk to potentially fall back down that path given all the good a sugar free existence has brought to me.
Life is easier without sugar, it’s just not an option and therefore I am not tormented with temptation.
It is a wonderful thing watching the sugar-free phenomenon take off!
I look forward to the growth of this niche in the market as the options available currently are very limited (stevia sweetened is good, I stay away from the artificial sweetened products).
Sarah, this comes at an excellent time as my options are limited.
Can’t wait, please send!!

Fantastic news. I look forward to reading your e-boo Sarah.
I am really struggling with my diet and self-care at the moment. Maybe this will help me. I’m a total sugar addict. I quit sugar for about 3 weeks then started eating it again. I had such bad withdrawal symptoms that I know I am addicted. I need to find that belief that I can do it. I can eat well, exercise, meditate, etc. With a busy part time job, uni studies and a 3 year old , time runs out, and eating is often my reward, my way of comforting myself. It represents love and nurturing. But it doesn’t love or nurture you. Once you have finished over eating it hurts. Hurts your health, self-esteem, you self-worth. Hurts your soul.

Hi Sarah,
I have been an avid reader of your blog Sarah and finally i am going to comment! I know that you have struggled with you AI Disease. I have IBS, fructose malobsorption, lactose intolerance, wheat/rye intolerance – possible gluten too! This subject interests me as many suggest that quitting sugar includes fruits as they contain fructose. However, there are many vegetables that also have fructose sugars in them too. As I have fructose malobsorption I have many fruits and vegetables that have to be eliminated in order to help my IBS. But it doesn’t just stop there. It also includes various nuts and seeds, grains, garlic( garlic additives), onions (onion additives) and artificial sweeteners. I will be interested to read the sorts of ‘substitutes’ that you use as I wonder as to whether or not they are in fact tolerable. I question the ‘cheating’ aspect – are you really avoiding the sugar? Some of the recipes I have read include ingredients such as avocados and dried fruits and honey – all things are are frightful for the fructose malobsoprtion sufferer!
On a brighter note – I am enjoying your new role as host of Eat Yourself Sexy. You show a good balance of compassion along with just ‘cutting to the chase’ and really putting the participants in the position where they have to really question themselves and their motivations – confronting, but necessary. Something maybe more of need to have in our lives in order for us to really ‘walk the walk’. We are very good at the ‘talk’ bit!

Miranda, thank you for your comments…on the fructose malabsorption front – I specify that the ebook doesn’t cater to this…
Also, some of the recipes I’ve posted on this site are not just geared at sugar-free folk.
ON another note, I feel for you with your issues. I hope you don’t lose faith and ease your way to health.xx

Thanks Sarah – most appreciated. I am still interested to read your e-book as any or all avenues are worth exploring. The only sugars I include in my diet are from fruit or vegetables, but you never know do you! When you know better, you do better!

I’m a 48 years old semi-retired male who’s getting plumper by the minute but loves brewing his own beer,’ old school stuff’, but I can see the benefits of this sugar free diet thing.
I come from the country myself & have mostly eaten quite well compared to townies but as you say it’s way too much sugar. They say it takes 21 days to kick a habit, how many habits would I have to kick????
p.s I love your story.
[Reply]
I’ve tried once before to quit sugar and get lured back in, I’ll be interested to give your 8-week program a go.

[Reply]
very much looking forward to the ebook Sarah – great idea! thank you.
i am really fascinated by this topic. because of my auto immune diease i’ve been told to steer clear of fruits and sugars by numerous naturopaths (as well as avoiding gluten and dairy).
it’s something i am really strict about for a few months, but inevitably fall back to bad habits through laziness / time poor / disorganised days that lead to poor meal planning.
the other difficulty i always come up against is social meals. it’s near impossible to know what ingredients have gone into dishes at restaurants.
any tips you have on “safe” meal options or better options when eating out would be amazing!
thanks again, can’t wait!
[Reply]
please alert me to your “i quit sugar” ebook – cant wait to hear about it. I did the schkinny maninny detox and felt amazing with no coffee or choc cravings but now ive fallen back into those old habits. Its not that i “crave” coffee, I just really like the quick full feeling I get after warm fluids which is why I really liked the juice cleanse. Anyhoo – looking forward to reading your information. HEEELLLLPPPP!
Hi Sarah, not sure if your book covers this but I am desperate for help. In general I eat well and maintain a healthy weight BUT the week before my period I go on a chocolate binge from hell! I can’t stop eating chocolate and crave it all the time. I can only assume that my body needs something the week before my period that its not getting from food and would much rather take supplements to fill in the missing gap than go on these guilt ridden choc binges (have had 3 chocolate bars already today and am now onto chocolate coffee beans)…. Your help would be greatly appreciated! Hate that my life gets taken over by hormonal demands. Thanks griz

I have to admit I am the same as you – pretend I am living this ultra healthy life, buying all the hyped up health alternatives but have recently started with a personal trainer and have to record and breakdown my food by protein, carbs and fat – what an eye opener. Great stuff Sarah! Sugar is nasty stuff. I also think a lot has to do with Fructose Malabsorption, a condition in my opinion which is very under diagnosed. Having struggled as a teenager and in my early 20′s with GI problems, fatigue, mood instability etc., I came across Fructose Malabsorption after exhausting other possible reasons and treatments of. I eliminated the offending foods; the transformation was instant and profound. I’d love to know your thoughts

I never really tried quitting sugar deliberately, with my great addiction to chocolate (I have switched to organic dark ones though). But there was once I didn’t have sugar for a few days, and my mind suddenly felt so tranquil and calm and I felt that I had always been in this ready-to-get-excited mode before the experience.
Not sure if i can be totally free of sugar but would definitely get a copy of your book to help get less sugar!

I’m really looking forward to reading this book. I, too am almost tempted to write a book about this. I first read about quitting sugar in your Sunday article. Since then, I have lost 20kg JUST by changing my diet. I always have played tennis once or twice a week, but my “experiment” was to not increase my excercise at all and see what the change in diet did. Well, the proof of my pudding is in the eating – 20 kg lighter. I have now started going to the gym on my next quest – the Wolverine workouts. I am also reading the Michael Pollan books after your mention of them and think that his book, “Food Rules” should be on everyone’s reading list – especially schools!!!!
Thank you so much for all these tips – I am considering a change of career from Engineering to Nutrition…..we’ll see.

Hello Sarah,
This is my first ‘blog’ but I felt so inspired by reading your ebook I had to thank you. you just make sense and your writing style is so lovely, so inclusive and just never sets off my b*sh*t alarms as so much ‘self-help’ writing does. Congratulations and thanks so much. I am excited about my sugar free journey. I’m thinking this is for me.

Hi Sarah,
As an editor by trade may I suggest the following
Page 22 – you have ‘curd’ instead of ‘curb’
Page 23 – you are missing some full stops
page 25 – the fraction one-eight needs to be small sized
page 39 you have ‘Mars’ instead of ‘bars’.
Sorry to be pedantic. Love the book and just want it to be better.
Kay
[Reply]
your book is great – thanks Sarah! I’m looking forward to trying your plan out.
I have quit sugar before as part of a diet to help with adrenal fatigue, and found it great how clear my head felt, and how in control of eating I was (I too am a Miranda-like, cake-in-the-bin-with-water-to-stop-me person). One of the more surprising things I found with the change in eating was the change in allergy-like responses to food. After a several weeks of my new diet, I accidentally ate an almond one day, and was very surprised (and pleased!) when my mouth didn’t swell up!
Some of the good habits have stayed with me (sugar-free cereal with seeds an blueberries for breakfast), but I have lapsed into eating more sugar than I like, and it doesn’t not help very much when stressed! Can’t wait to get back to feeling “clear and clean” again!

I’m so excited to read this book and give it a try!

i find it interesting that you say that fruit in sugar is the same as sugar in a mars bar. I think you are missing a little bit of research- fructose or fruit sugar is a monosaccharide whereas sucrose is a disaccharide, the molecule of sucrose is made up of a fructose coupled with a glucose, and just like high fructose corn syrup is dramatically different from sugar, fructose and sucrose are also dramatically different.
Calling them the same is kind of like saying that water is the same thing as milk. sure milk contains a lot of water and they are both liquids but they are not the same.
Just like every food group, moderation is the key to health. The molecules that your body processes to create energy are, chemically sugars, and if you give those up, that is called starvation, and you die.
There are lots of different types of sugars or carbohydrates, some very simple and some very complex, but our bodies need a variety of molecules including sugars, fatty acids, fats, and protein as well as vitamins and minerals, in order to survive.
I would love to see the chemistry you use to support your hypothesis and I would be happy to explain in additional detail the science I have mentioned here.

You cannot be serious that you think eating fruit is bad for you. That is patently absurd. Any fresh, natural, unprocessed food is good for you. Period. I do not contend one should live on fruit, and perhaps it’s best to avoid dried fruits for the most part, but fresh fruit is a boon to any healthy lifestyle.
And surely you know those little raisin-like things are CURRANTS … a CURRENT is something you find in the ocean or a river.

I agree with this. Fruit can’t be compared to Twinkies, no matter the sugar. Anyone remember learning about scurvy?
[Reply]
November 28th, 2011 at 12:41 pm
Actually for the 40% of the population with fructose malapsorption (and to the greater number than that who are sensitive to fructose,) it’s not absurd at all, it is quite accurate. I think you are oversimplifiying when you say any “fresh, natural” food is good for you. Rhubard leaves are poisonous. The leaves and seeds of many stone fruits are toxic. Potato plants and raw potato are pretty bad for you. You can even give yourself beta-carotene poisoning eating too much carrot. Why not apply the same logic to fruit? Eat the low-fructose stuff and not too much, was what the book actually suggested.
And your richest source of vitamin C to prevent scurvy is actually capsicum. Most fruits are comparatively low in nutrients and high in sugar compared to vegetables. You can give fruit up completely and be perfectly healthy, if you eat adequate vegetables.

Bravo Mia Bluegirl! You obviously know your stuff.
There is so much misinformation out there and sooooo much resistance to the idea of giving up sugar. It seems to push so many buttons. I am close to a year without it and my life has changed for the better in many ways.
We have been indoctrinated about fruit being a virtuous food, but there is, as with so many things, much more to the story. I was very glad to read your comments. Thanks!
November 28th, 2011 at 7:31 pm
Thanks Lucy.
Honestly I was just kinda hoping nobody would pick up that capsicums are technically a fruit…
I am excited to receive your newsletter. Really enjoy your blog.

I would love to see the guide!! I have been trying to go gluten free and SUGAR free is the most difficult thing I’ve been dealing with, and it severely effects me… its obviously an addiction.

Hi there, your book sounds absolutely fascinating. I stopped taking sugar in my tea a couple of months ago and havent really felt the pinch. Although I still eat fruit and sweets, chocolates and “naughty” things. Once you get rid of the naughty things, do you replace it with anything because I would have thought replacing it with fruit would be really good for you?
Thanks for your help.

There has been an 8 week IQS program which has just wrapped up. I would suggest buying the ebook and reading this blog. Also David Gillespie’s books are great to read for info and helping to quit as well!

You are dumb. How are you gonna say fruit or honey is bad for you when its been proevn to have antioxidants and promote health. dumb.
[Reply]
March 4th, 2012 at 11:35 am
Oh dear. Ash, you should perhaps check your facts and do some research, such as reading the information on this blog, before making insulting remarks that say more about you than anyone else. I can only assume you are very young, so there is hope for you. Besides, no one is saying fruit or honey are bad for you, just that in large amounts, they contain a lot of fructose which can cause health problems when consumed in excess.
[Reply]
March 4th, 2012 at 1:43 pm
Thanks Lucy, I was going to respond but you said it perfectly
[Reply]
Wow…I can’t believe that Ash person would call this concept dumb when she clearly is the ignorant one! Anywho…I am really looking forward to reading this because I have come to realize I am a sugar addict. If I eat sugar, especially refined, I just want more and more and more! Then, I feel a little crazy…probably a mix of guilt and huge spike in my blood sugar. People see me as healthy person, I am a healthy weight, I workout 5 days a week and eat healthy as far as whole grains, good fats, lean protein etc…little do they know. I seriously think its similar to people with alcohol addiction…which does run in my family. I do enjoy alcoholic beverages but I’m deathly scared of becoming an alcoholic so I have many rules about drinking ie. don’t drink alone, don’t drink when I’m sad, frustrated or emotional, don’t drink everyday, don’t waist calorie intake on a drink, etc. Maybe I should apply these rules to eating sugar as I think I’ve become a sugarholic instead!

Hi, might sound daft but I have just paid for the ebook using paypal (never bought an ebook before), and it says that my paypal e-cheque will clear in 5-7 days… so how will I access the ebook after that? Will it get emailed to me? I’m so confused of how this works! Any help much appreciated, can’t wait to read the book =)

I was curious if you were also going to have a hardcopy of your book available too. I guess I’m old fashioned that way. Can’t wait to read it. Thanks.

I would also love this book. I actually have quit most bad foods, but sugar (particularly chocolate) is a horrible weakness of mine still. I have lost 80 pounds in 10 months and I know I could tone properly and take the rest of the fat off if I could just learn to live (mostly) without most sugar.
Thanks!

Just FYI – your “my story” section talks about wanting a “cinnamon scroll”.

My mom gave up sugar ( and all substitutes) 35 years ago as she came to understand that sugar was her addiction and she just couldn’t have any. I gave up sugar 12 years ago but I do use Splenda. People always asked me how I did it, and all I can say is if you just can be tough for a month and it gets easier and easier. The hardest part to be honest, is refusing desserts that people have made when you go visiting. Having my clothes fit, is way better than eating something sweet for a brief moment in time. Make a decision then DO IT!

i adore your blog. i am currently on the anti-candida diet under the guidance of my naturopath and it’s been a journey to get here and to finally see the foods that were harming me. I’m looking at it in a positive light, but days I still struggle and trying to get my menus in order. I can’t wait to read your e-book!

Thanks for this post! Sugar is so hard to break an addiction from. Kudos for becoming sugar-free and educating others on how to do so. It’s amazing how eating well can make us (almost instantly) feel and look before.

I am diabetic and could really use your help. Carbs are just deadly because they are so addictive. Your email alert above doesn’t allow me to put in my email address and I would love to receive your new meal plan. Thank you!

Hi TM, yes that 8-week program closed a few weeks back. We’ll be running more next year. Meantime subscribe to my standard newsletter (see home page top right) and simply follow the program in the book (presume you’ve downloaded). Of course, you’re welcome to follow the conversation on the IQS Facebook page, but you will need to have read the book to follow it.
