Phew! Yes. Indeed. I’ve been working on this ebook for months now. And now it’s ready and I’m a little bit scared, but ultimately really happy to be able to share something that has truly changed my life. I hope you enjoy it….
I quit sugar: a simple 8-week program
by Sarah Wilson
If you’ve thought about quitting sugar, tried different ways, but can’t quite cut the ties… this ebook is your sweet, effective solution.
in eight weeks get clean + vibrant + yes, lose weight
Inspired by my own personal experience, my work as a health coach, and from some of the best experts from around the world, I Quit Sugar is practical week-by-week guide full of tips, recipes, advice and inspiration to quit the sweet stuff – for good.
Curious?
If you want to know a little more before you buy, go here and I give a little more info.
Love the design?
Well, thank you. Actually, I have some very special women to thank for that. Siri, Emily and Anna fromRed Handed Studio are responsible for the feel, the vibe, the super clever info-graphics (you’ll need to read the book to know what I mean…but they’ve GONE TO TOWN with some really kooky culinary treatments). Designing an ebook full of different grabs of info and making it readable IS A SKILL. And involves love and passion. These ladies have oodles of both. Ask for their portfolio – a blend of illustration and design prettiness – to see more of their work. You’ll certainly be seeing more of it here on my blog!

Hi Sarah I really love your ebook it is fantastic, you’ve gone to a lot of trouble and I think its a really valuable tool for those of us needing to take the ‘kick sugar challenge’. I’ll be recommending your book on my site. Seeing as it is such a lovely book to look at and my printer just won’t do it justice it would be great if you end up doing a print run – I’d definately be securing my copy.
Thanks again
Mel

Sarah, your e-book is fantastic. Looking forward to the 8 week challenge.
Can I just ask if you say to quit most fruits (with the odd exception), why is there a picture of you holding a lemon? Surely lemon have a high sugar content?

BTW, you actually look very healthy and relaxed in the photos, so guessing your new lifestyle suits you well.

I just bought the book, scrolled down a few pages and then found the disclaimer – “This book is not a suitable guide for fructose malabsorption”!! Which is what I have. Aside from all the high-fructose fruit and vegies, is there any other reason I won’t be able to take on your advice?

Hey Sarah, your condition requires a lot more vigilance than what I prescribe, so I don’t want to misguide someone like you or be irresponsible. That said, the principles for quitting are totally suited for you, if you adhere to them more strictly than I do and than what I suggest (ie allowing fruit into the diet later on). I’m not an expert in your condition, so am just treading carefully. That said, I’d love to get your feedback on how YOU think it sits with your needs. And if for any reason you’re not happy, I’ll refund you! x

I read it last night, it’s brilliant (and gorgeous!) I am embarking today : )
I did “quit” at the start of the year when you blogged about it Sarah but gradually little “cheats” (as you say, the “healthy” cheats like dark chocolate etc are easier to succumb to) started to pepper my diet until I realised that I hadn’t quit at all!
All your little tips and tricks will be very helpful this time around.
Thank you Sarah xx

I have never posted before, but wanted to today – just to congratulate you on your e-book and let you know how much I have appreciated you sharing your journey toward healing. I am a writer, so everything you said about reaching for sugar when a deadline approached resonated with me. I have been sugar free for five days now – last night I had a major test after a horrible day, and I binged….on almonds! What’s more, the scale stayed in the same kilo (much to my surprise, but testimony to the whole fat debate!). I am starting to experience that clarity that you and so many others have talked about, and it is a nice place to be – instead of thinking about chocolate and biscuits all the time! Thanks, Sarah, for this little piece of inspiration, which has already made a big difference in my life.

Thank you so much for this Sarah- It honestly couldn’t come to me in a better phase of my life. My sugar addiction is getting to the point of being ludicrously out of control and I feel utterly stuck and frustrated with myself. I’ve just come out of a tough few days that resulted to me constantly binging on sugar and starchy carbs in an effort to numb my anxiety, so I very nearly cried this morning when I got an email about your lovely book.
I read the whole thing today and feel so empowered and relieved that there is hope for me yet! Thank you for empowering me and others to take control of our lives and to eat in harmony with what our body truly needs.

I think your best best is to just do the purchase again with the quantity you want.
I bought 1 for myself originally then went back and just bought another 5 for family/friends. You’ve still got the original file but now you also also have peace of mind.
It’s funny how in this day and age of media companies blowing on about piracy and people ranting about protecting digital works, here we are proving that true fans are always prepared (and want) to pay for a great person’s work.

I’m looking forward to reading this when I get back from vacation. I don’t think of myself as much of a sugar person, but I think your story of sugar sneaking into the diet probably does apply to me! (i.e. I’m being dishonest with myself.) I need to reform!

Hi Sarah,
I’ve downloaded your book an hour ago, and have already finished it. I have been feeling icky for years, with migraines and all. Recently I quit smoking, and while I feel healthier, I still feel bloated and not well. Hearing of your ebook and now reading it, I have decided I’m going to give it a try. Cutting back on milk-drinks has already helped a bit, and this confirms for me that it could be sugar that’s making me feel ill.
The only thing I may have problems with is finding the sugar replacements, because I’m in the Netherlands, but I will try as good as I can.
Thanks so much for opening my eyes.
[Reply]
congratulations sarah!
[Reply]
Sarah,
I’m curious to know what you think about sharing the book (given it’s electronic and so easy to copy).
I bought 6 copies because I know people I want to share it with and did not want you (as an author) to miss out on the revenue. However, if the book was in paper form, I would still buy 6 copies and eventually they would be shared around until hundreds of pairs of eyes saw it (which is my aim in buying multiple copies).
My problem is, I would feel guilty “lending” new electronic copies to people above the 6 already bought, even though I wouldn’t if it was on paper.
How to you feel about this?
Thanks.
P.S.: I read all it yesterday. I’m a low sugar/processed food person already (thanks to Tim Ferriss), but I’ve now decided to do the experiment and cut it out completely.
[Reply]
September 29th, 2011 at 9:40 pm
Jason, you are very honest and earnest! Thank you for caring. I’m mostly happy people are reading the thing! And I simply trust I’ll be paid enough for my efforts. It’s very considerate of you to buy six. But you most certainly have my permission to onpass your copy to others! What comes around goes around, especially in web land. PS from memory you linked me to a Tim Ferriss link a while back?
[Reply]
September 29th, 2011 at 10:09 pm
Sarah, I’d buy a hundred of the ebooks if I was working and had the money (and that’s just ’cause I’m right behind you 100% on this). But you did put in the effort to do the hard yards for the rest of us – not to mention the inspiration – so that’s worth paying for.
Yep, I mentioned Tim Ferriss in a comment to “are you too busy to live your life?” and a repost of “fourteen rules for eating…” on my own blog (I hope you don’t mind, it was too good not to share).
Tim’s “4-Hour Work Week” book helped put me on the right track to changing my work life (and life in general) for the better, and his “4-Hour Body” opened my eyes to better eating/exercise (I now own a Kettlebell and did all my Winter exercise with it thanks to him) and started me experimenting with both. I actually think both of you share the same great message a lot.
Thanks again for the inspiration and I’ll keep spreading the word.
[Reply]
September 30th, 2011 at 10:05 am
Hi Jason..surely 1 copy is enough. And why not send the link out to your friends and suggest they buy it instead? This is still supporting Sarah, just in a different way and spreading the word at the same time.
September 30th, 2011 at 11:35 am
Funny… questioning generosity and a giving nature? Good on you Jason!
September 30th, 2011 at 11:51 am
Tracy, I wasn’t questioning generosity! Jason said if HE HAD THE MONEY he would buy more copies. I merely suggested another alternative, that is, those he knows WITH money buy the book. Whatever way, it’s still supporting Sarah and her cause.
September 30th, 2011 at 12:04 pm
My reasoning for buying multiple copies and giving them to friends (as opposed to just sending them a link) is I know most won’t go for buying it themselves. And because I believe in it so much and want friends to at least learn about and consider it, I’ll buy it for them. I do know what you mean though, Mia.
And, thanks Tracy.
September 30th, 2011 at 12:09 pm
Hi Mia, sorry was reading another comment too, not yours in particular
Congratulations Sarah – probably a huge relief to finally have the book completed. As someone who has fructose/lactose/wheat/gluten intolerances, I already have restrictions on what to and in what quantities. However, in the past few weeks, reading some of your other posts, I have done some other ‘shift’s that are working wonders. I have restricted dairy completely, increased my protein through eggs and fish, changed my breakfast from grains, fruit and yoghurt to hard boiled eggs with and reduced the already limited fruit that I could have to only 1 serve a day. It is amazing the difference it has made. I don’t eat processed foods, and already had a very low sugar load, but even that reduction has done wonders for my IBS issues. And the bonus is that i don’t even ever feel that I need or crave fruit. I was one whom loved all sorts of fruit and fruit salads, thinking that because it was fresh it must be healthy, without realising the trouble it was causing my inner body systems. Sometimes even the best intentions, are not always the right ones.
For anyone who is committed to taking on this new healthy eating approach, just know that at times it may be a struggle, but you will feel so much better for it and your body with begin to make the shift and work with you, not against you. But most importantly it is your body, so you have to do for it what is right. If that means that it is different to someone or even everyone else, that’s because it is your body. We do not have the ability to change into someone else’s body to know if what we are feeling/struggling with is right or wrong. We are our own teachers – we just have to learn to ‘listen’ to ourselves. Take in what other’s say, but do not ever underestimate your own ability to make a judgment/decision that best suits you – ‘the individual’

September 29th, 2011 at 10:39 am
Miranda, I have done the same thing, and noticed a huge difference. I don’t eat red meat or chicken, and previously had fruit for breakfast – but I was crashing before 9am. So, after reading Sarah’s comments and posts on her blog, I started making an “egg pancake” every morning with one egg and a whatever veggies I have on hand. I have added in fish and cut out sugar, and I finally feel like my blood sugar is stabalizing for the first time in my life. Normally I would get out of the office for a walk at lunch, and be faint by the time I got back, but not any more. I can’t recommend it enough!
As you said, we have to listen to our bodies. It’s sometimes hard to work out exactly what it needs, but once you do, it changes your life.

Sarah, I am loving your ebook and most of the way through it already. I understand the all or nothing feeling with refined sugars, breads etc and like you at university I went from sugar treat to sugar treat. At 38 I’m all grown up, eat a lot better and understand nutrition much more through lots of reading. Two points I wonder if I will come across in your book: that mums in pregnancy who eat sugar and go from rush to rush are more likely to have children who have a sweet tooth, who subsequently have similar issues with sugar consumption in their adulthood. ( have read this somewhere ) Also, that folks who over consume sugar, as with alcohol, have all the more ragged, aged – looking faces … Related to oxidization or something.. Not clear on details. Anyway, congrats again on a great read.

Hi Sarah,
Congrats on your new book! Bought it yesterday – really love your style of writing and words of wisdom. After discovering your blog, I had quit sugar completely for a few weeks, and was feeling great. Then an overseas holiday and a domestic road trip really saw that fly out of the window.
Now I’m back to my (slightly?!) grumpy, sleep deprived, bloated self I am really looking forward to implementing your suggestions xxx

Sorry to hijack this post everybody, and the eBook does look great (although I don’t know that I’m ready for a completely sugar free life just yet. We’re just coming into mango season!), but I was wondering what Sarah’s thoughts were on this news article?
http://www.theage.com.au/lifestyle/diet-and-fitness/reebok-slapped-on-buttocktoning-shoe-claims-20110929-1kxyh.html
I recall you were a big supporter of these particular shoes, and I’m just curious as to whether you’ve changed your stance in light of these findings? I’m sure most of your blog readers would be smart enough to realise that many of the products you endorse have been provided to you for free, in the hopes of getting a positive mention on this site. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of yours and a regular reader of this blog, but psuedo science like these shoes and the balance bands has always seemed laughable to me. I am genuinely curious: do you still use your shoes for walking and do you still feel that they make a difference to your body tone?
[Reply]
September 29th, 2011 at 9:36 pm
Hi, I hadn’t read that article. It doesn’t quite outline whether the slap is for the claim that they lead to ” 28 per cent more strength and tone in the buttock muscles”. Or for any kind of broader fitness claim. So it’s hard to respond. The former is entirely ridiculous.
When I wrote about them ages ago my point was that they did shift the angle of the way I walked and thus saw me use diff muscles. Yep, I got sent the shoes. But I have a policy of trying out only things that have intrigued me and are items people are wanting to know about. Ie they need to be a trend worth investigating. And I investigate openly. You’ll note when I reviewed the balance band I was not a fan…

Thank you for your fabulous book! I am very excited to get started – I have become so much more aware of my diet since reading your blog & having recently quit smoking (like another of your readers) I have struggled to not fill the gap with sweets & chocolate. I think it will help enormously to have your framework to work from. I also love the idea of having a sugar free buddy to work through it with … If any readers want a buddy to get through the 8 weeks I am up for it!!

Hi Sarah
I have just bought your book and look forward to reading it. I read your blog posts about giving up and I found it helpful. I have been sugar free for about 8 weeks. For the first 5 weeks or so I really felt like there was less colour in the world! I figured withdrawal was making me flat, but also dawned on me how much I use food to soothe me.
Anyway, I know it makes sense, I love not being driven by sugar cravings (helpful when working in an office with endles morning teas!) and I feel better but I have not lost a skerrick of weight and my belly looks and feels bigger. And yes I do need to lose weight.
I look forward to reading your book for further insights.
Cheers

Thanks for the ebook Sarah! I downloaded last night and read ‘cover to cover’ – fabulous. Even though I had already followed your journey earlier this year and did my own sugar-free February, I still found your book so helpful as a reminder of the little tips and tricks that you need to remind yourself of every day. As a self-confessed chocoholic, I’m so glad you addressed my biggest fear – I love the sweet stuff so much (even knowing it’s no good for me) so how am I going to say no when it is offered to me? The answer? You just do it! I’ve been doing sugar-free for September also and now on my final day, I’m going to keep it going.. Today someone came round at work and offered a slice of lemon sponge cake – I didn’t even have to think twice – I just said ‘no thanks’.. And went and made myself a cup of lemon/ginger tea instead.. I think I will give in occasionally when I feel comfortable to do so, but I will come up with some sort of mantra (like your strengthening the muscle visualisation) and just work my way towards a mostly sugar-free life. Hooray!!

Great work Alison – well done on staying strong. It does get easier. We all brush our teeth each day, no questions asked, so why would we not want to do something like this that is also of super benefit to our body. My attitude is that we have to treat our bodies with the respect of it being our ‘machine’. We treat our machines such as laptops, mobiles, ipads, cars etc carefully, why not our own machine – we can’t take this one back and exchange if for a newer/more improved model. We wouldn’t put unleaded petrol in a car that runs on diesel so why would you want to ‘fuel’ your body with substances – food or drink – that are going to be harmful to its operation? Our bodies react and deal with the pressures we place on it, but there comes a point where it can’t operate successfully. Years ago when I embarked on making my lifestyle a healthier one – including food, exercise etc and losing 40kg in the process – it was interesting how many of my friends and family would try and sabotage my change by questioning why I wouldn’t eat something etc. It was tiresome. But I am the winner as I am still the ‘health nut’ as I was referred to and am all the better for it.
Now you just have to push those goal posts of one month and try and make it on-going – it just becomes a part of your life – a habit or a lifestyle change that will remain.
And I found that others can question all the want, think your mad etc, but the only person you have to answer to is yourself. So keep at it – don’t ‘cheat’ or ‘treat’ yourself through the sugar – pick something else – like a new pair of shoes or dress – or even as you did a nice cup of tea – no sugar!!
It’s interesting now as when there is an occasion where a food item is offered that I don’t wish to eat as it isn’t healthy or want my body needs, I get the same comment – “I don’t know how you can be so good”. And you nailed it – you just do it!
Good luck Alison!

I’m tempted to quit sugar, but not sure if I’m ready or willing. Part of me thinks everything’s fine in moderation and after all sugar in the form of chocolate or in my coffee does give me some comfort when feeling depressed – I know, I know. But I definitely am in need of changes in my diet. I occasionally suffer from my blood sugar levels dropping where I feel the need to scoff down some chocolate or something sweet very quickly. So, does anyone think the book will be inspiring enough for me, or do I really need to feel fully motivated first to get through the 8 weeks.

Hi Eliza. There are a number of options for getting the book to your iPhone/iPad. It depends on what software you use, etc. however four that come to mind:
1) If you use e-mail then you can e-mail it to yourself, then download and view the attachment through the normal iPhone/iPad mail application. A bit “low-tech” but it works and is probably the easiest overall.
2) Try a file sharing/synchronisation service. I use DropBox (https://www.dropbox.com/) for exactly this reason. I have files (including this book) synced between by computer, iPhone and iPad. It’s really easy to install and use and has a free subscription. It has an iPhone/iPad app too.
3) I also use Evernote (http://www.evernote.com/). A bit like DropBox but it’s an application designed specifically for creating, storing and archiving “notes”. Notes can include all sorts of attachments, including PDF files. Again, easy to use and install and it has a free subscription. It has an iPhone/iPad app too.
4) Google Docs (if you have a GMail account). I think, from memory, you can browse to your Google Docs via the iPhone/iPad web browser and open files you have in that service. Again, it’s free.
Personally, I find DropBox easiest for this kind of file sharing with all my devices.
I think all the services also work with Mac computers if that’s what you use (I use Windows PCs). I hope that helps and let me know if you need more info.

Hi Emily,
My first questions before saying yes in answer to your question would be 1/ how much sugar do you consume and 2/ do you have any other reasons you are keen to explore other than the small weight loss?

I wish I knew how much sugar. Probably too much. I do like my treats! And I’d love to have more energy via something other than chocolate and Diet Coke.

Oh you would definitely benefit! For me when I am sugar free I notice an immediate improvement in my energy levels, mainly because they are steadier rather experiencing the lows that follow the sugar “high”. So you will most likley gain “real” energy rather than that temporary high you would be getting from the chocolate and Diet Coke (and don’t get me started on fake sweeteners, lol). I am at Day 1 again today after having a bit of a “bust”, and during that I realised that my sugar free state of mind and body is DEFINITELY far superior. I have literally experienced sugar hang overs in the last few days, awful. As Sarah says in the book, just go gently and think of it as an experiment that you don’t have to stick to if you don’t notice any positive changes.

My hubby and I have been off sugar (none in the house!) for 10 months since reading some Paleo books my son had, and also Marks Daily Apple site. Best thing we have ever done. The carbs followed and we now only buy a true sourdough loaf occasionally. Both so much more healthy, lost weight, moods improved. Overall “on a high”. Sugar affects so many things in your body – once you’ve quit the habit, you don’t want to go back….
