Morning Show fluff + truth + the last IQS supper
Happy respill everyone. I’m heading off to watch the disaster that is Australian politics unfold. Personally, I’m glad/not surprised it’s all happening. Truth must find its way out. It can only fester below the surface of consciousness so long before the pressure builds up. The boil must be lanced. And we are at a point, I think, where non-truths are simply intolerable. They can’t be muzzled.
We’ve evolved. It’s just taken a while for politics to catch up.
It is no surprise, either, that the media and finance industries (as opposed to say, education and garbage collecting) have been so shaken up recently. The deceit of greed and power had festered in those two industries too long, unchecked, unquestioned. And so it all exploded (or imploded). Media and finance specifically needed it.
The truth of former Prime Minister KRudd’s bad behaviour and Machiavellian tactics MUST come out. The ALP need to speak plainly and bear the consequences. I truly believe, though, that as they do, the Australian public will smell the shift. They’ll like it. They might not understand it. But they’ll feel it and smell it.
This implosion is perfect.
I loved this Annabel Crabb column on the relief of getting the truth out.
This read by Michael Gawenda is also very truth exposing – about the real role the media played in all this (you can see why Prime Minister JuliaGillard et al were frothing at journalists…they should’ve told the truth instead of keeping up with the “you’re creating a beat-up” accusation).
But meantime, here’s something fluffier for your entertainment…I was on The Morning Show last week chatting, yes, sugar.
I’d had 30 minutes sleep the night before (and the night before) due to my thyroid doing its agitated thing…so was only JUST getting my message across. To all you insomniacs out there: respect. I share not to make any kind of excuses, but because I know I like learning of other insomniacs out there…it feels less lonely, retrospectively, somehow. (And is there anything more lonely that lying awake at 4.30am?).
Finally a reminder: Tonight is our final I Quit Sugar webinar, at 8pm. Sign up here. And post your questions below or on the I Quit Sugar Facebook page. If it weren’t a virtual affair, I’d share some scones or cupcakes and we could stand awkwardly around the photocopier like an end-of-course farewell. Feel free to bring your own along tonight in front of your screen!

Compelling column by author Nikki Gemmell in the most recent Weekend Australian Magazine on ‘Why Be A Writer’, and how she has no option but to tell the truth, no matter what.
Nikki says:
“Writing hurts. Women who write feel too much. Honesty is the most potent thing of all – it’s amazing how much support you get when you tell the truth. And it’s the hardest thing I’ll ever do but nothing else gives me such a quietness of the soul; I’ll not be talked out of it”

I saw that. I loved the “quietness of the soul” bit.

wow sarah, great stuff on such little sleep!
i’m sure you’ve tried everything for the insomnia but have you ever tried legs up the wall for about 20 minutes, and or nadi sodana or viloma pranayama? i’m not insomniac but have bouts of wakefulness sometimes and i find this really helpful.
you look great girl, keep up the good work!

Awww insomniac love. Right back at ya
You still look amazing, so either you wear it well or I need the Morning Show make-up artist after my own sleepless nights!

The best part about being an insomniac is its only 9 more sleeps until Christmas.
lame?
how about this one,
A dyslexic agnostic insomniac, lays awake at night wondering if there is a dog.

Hi Sarah,
A question for the IQS Webinar tonight.
In the past week I have found out I may have Hypothyroidism and am waiting on some test results. I don’t think my results were that bad (my TSH levels are 4.79 which the doctor says indicates ‘mild’ Hypothyroidism and my free T4 were within normal limits) but I have symptoms of lethargy, depression, sore glands on my throat, tiredness, achy muscles, etc. I am waiting on my T3, T4 and T4 antibodies results.
As you have Hashimotos – what advice would you have liked at the beginning when you found out? I’m about to look into my diet, am resting alot, am considering yoga, but I feel guilty for having so much time off work.
Thanks so much in advance!
Emma

Hi Emma, first rule with hypothyroid issues is NO GUILT. The lethargy and depression make you feel bad enough without adding guilt to the mix. As someone who started off with ‘mild’ hypothyroidism 15 years ago, my advice is to do everything you can to boost your immune system and improve your health – gradually. The thyroxine tablets seem to work fine for most people but don’t with me. Every 18 months or so my levels play up and I have to adjust the meds. The lethargy has never entirely lifted and I either don’t sleep well or sleep very heavily. My strong advice, even if the tablets work for you, is to make sure you eat organic wholefood from a wide range of sources and only exercise gently – don’t push yourself too hard.

Hey Sarah. A few questions for you:
I know you’ve mentioned not to juice fruits as you get all the fructose and no fibre, but what about blending them whole, say, in a smoothie? Does this do the same thing? I know from past reading that the GI goes up (as your body doesn’t have to work as hard to process the fruit, or something), but is it an issue as far as sugar is concerned?
Do you think it’s fine to still label things sugar-free when they include fruit, post 8 week detox? (I’m starting a healthy, sugar-free food blog and have been wondering this for a few weeks. Seems like you’re probably the best person to ask!)
Lastly, will there be another round of IQS? I’m sticking with it, but I thoroughly enjoy all of the posts/webinars/info posted during the 8 weeks.
See you tonight.

Ugghh I’m having a dumb moment, I can’t ask a Thyroid question on a IQS webinar! Sorry. How embarrassing! However, did you find quitting sugar helped improve your Hashimotos? Thanks

I’ve been trying my best to follow all this respill stuff, thank goodness for the internet otherwise I would be totally out of the loop!
Sarah I watched your segment a few days ago and must say you rocked those yellow jeans! Unfortunately it will be 4am over here when the webinar is on so this time I’ll definitely be asleep! Fingers crossed it gets recorded this time so I can watch it later
Looking forward to some more info and questions from others. Right now I’m thinking about the muffins I’m going to be baking, if they turn out well I’ll post the recipe here
…. am off to bake!

So I’ve been all about ‘no sugar’ since, perhaps, 16 or so. I’m such a fan though of your work, and naturally wanted to watch + hear what you had to say.
Post-pressing the play button, first thing I hear is something about cadbury’s caramel chocolate …. gotta’ ♥ advertising.

Sarah, do you have a special attachment to the color yellow at the moment, or is it just a coincidence that you have worn it in several photo shots recently when you talk about food? Bright yellow is associated with intellect, freshness, and joy – would you say this is true for you right now?

Those jeans are actually 8 years old. My wardrobe is limited…I live out of 2 suitcases…so there’s a bit of rotation going on. Yes, I’ve always loved to wear yellow and orange

Sorry I’m going to miss the webinar tonight but same as Naz, 4am is a tad early for me to be up. Looking forward to catching up on the recording.
BTW, glad Julia is still in power and I truly hope that we start to feel and smell the shift, even from all the way in the US!

Just watched your webinair. Great stuff. I only started watching you with your Eat yourself Sexy programme which I think is great and then your blog and easing into the I Quit Sugar.
You are gorgeous on the outside but seem really genuine.
I have never written this to anyone before so keep up the good work

Hey Sarah. Wise words. And I really feel Julia cops it more than most politicians cos’ she’s a woman…Anyway just wondering if you’ve managed to find out about the whole coconut fructose thingy? Or maybe I’ve missed it somewhere? Cheers xxx

Hi Sarah
I was just wondering if you could please share a few more snippets of your revelations and insights from Richard Branson and his ‘screw business as usual and build more muscle’ philosphy tonight? I find him such an inspirational man who really has the gift for reaching out to connect with people in an attempt to make the world a better place. Or is there already a Sunday Life section or blog post I have missed that shares more of this?
Thanks!

Ok just watched the webinar from last night, loved the snack suggestions as I’ve been searching for some new snacks. I do have a couple of questions though –
1 – In the webinar, Sarah you mention staying away from tomato based sauces. I stopped buying pasta sauce from the shops a while ago and eating the stuff when I eat out because of the added sugar, but before IQS started making my own using either canned diced tomatoes or fresh tomatoes but not adding any sugar in. My husband and I do enjoy pasta and sauce based dishes and it would be a pretty hard thing to stay away from so I’m just wondering what the deal is with that? Is it ok since there’s no added sugar?
2 – You have mentioned a few times about not using olive oil in cooking and of course staying away from things like vegetable oil/canola oil etc. Every now and then I like making crumbed fish or chicken (schnitzel) and it is something my husband likes a lot because of his background. I mostly use a shallow fry method for these using olive oil even though most recipes call for canola oil or vegetable oil. Would you suggest baking in the oven instead? Or do you have any tips on cooking those sorts of breaded foods or if anyone else has any suggestions I’m happy to hear them!
And finally am looking forward to the cookbook, best of luck with it!

Hey Sarah
I’m a big fan… but a little confused. Just watching your ustream IQS dated 27th of Feb and when you were talking about butter v margarine you said butter goes rancid on the bench and so you can imagine what it does to your insides…. I think you meant margarine?
Anyway I don’t mean to be critical I just wanted clarification.
Cheers
Nicky
ps My sister Jo once pitched an ad to you for Cleo YEARS ago (animation about astrology and sexually active girls….) anyway she said you were very kind to her – so bless you

I’m a diehard insomniac – and the weird thing is – I like my awake time at night – get the best writing done, invent the best stories, think about great cooking – and then it gets to 7am and i am the walking dead. Partner has long given up on complaining about how he goes to bed and wake sup to a re-arranged house and life! Find day time hard – am I a friggin vampire?!

Hello Sarah…watched the video…you are so adorable and so funny. Sure could not tell you were lacking sleep. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last year and started watching my diet and excersising. What has been the hardest thing is finding all the sugar in foods you never realized were full of sugar!! Everything from cereal to canned nuts! Really?
When I started reading labels I got so mad!!!
Anyway- it’s a journey and fun finding people like you to help and give me so much info! Thanks so much! I am also a student at IIN also and learning so much!!
Sincerely
Sue
