I studied to be a health coach with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition a while back and it’s helped me a huge deal with building the knowledge I now share on this site.
I get asked almost daily for more information on how the course works, whether it’s accredited, would I recommend it to yoga teachers/bloggers/stay-at-home-mums/three-legged dogs…
For the sake of efficiency I’ve answered most of the questions here in this webinar.
It’ll take you 28 minutes of your time to view.
I’ve been as brutally honest about it as I can be with my assessment.
And full disclosure: as I mention in the webinar and elsewhere, I do get a commission for introducing people to the course. I thought you should know this. That said, I do only get the commission if you mention my name when you enrol. If you’re comfortable with this, I’d love you to remember to drop my name to the INN people when you speak to them!
And anything I’ve missed, you can probably find here or here.
I think the most useful link is this one, to the speakers who lecture in the course. You’ll recognise a lot of the names: Sally Fallon, Mark Hyman, Walter Willett, Andrew Weil, etc.
Also, you might like to download this INN ebook…it contains a bunch of recipes and information and will provide a good insight into what the course offers. And. Hey. It’s free.
Good luck with your decision!

Hi Tina. The video works fine for me – what’s does it do for you?

Hey Sarah!
Thanks for posting this webinar for people who are interested in IIN– just a couple things for your readers, the IIN course is only available online now (not in person), and it is for people who are interested in starting a Health Coaching practice, so that part is really key in the course.
To clear up a couple of things– I am a Health Coach in Australia and was 100% ready/qualified to coach people in regards to their nutrition, health concerns/goals, and heal ailments via whole food. A naturopath is typically someone who recommends herbal remedies, whereas an IIN health coach is someone who uses whole food & lifestyle factors to improve the health & quality of their clients.
If anyone is looking to start their own business in health coaching/nutrition, this course is great for that, and legally in Australia you do not need anything else. If you want to be hired by a company, however, that’s a different story.
If anyone has any questions feel free to contact me

Hi Sarah, I recall you posted a $1,000-off offer for this course on your facebook page earlier this year. Are you likely to be repeating that offer at any time in the future? Cheers

I just signed up recently for the course for the late march intake after reading about it from your blog. I’m not interested in being a health coach either but want to learn all i can for personal health reasons. Can’t wait to start classes! Btw, as a newly enrolled student, they sent me an email for a $500 scholarship I could send to anyone. Anyone interested feel free to email me at thediytouch [at] gmail.com.
Sarah if it’s not appropriate for me to post this here, feel free to delete the post.

oops my bad. I just reread the email again and it said that it’s only for friends and family and folks who found out about this via any Internet postings would not be eligible for the scholarship. Sorry for the boohoo. Was too excited to share. Please disregard my above posting. Sarah, could you help delete it please? I couldn’t figure how to do it thanks.

Hi!
I graduated from IIN in 2008. Like Sarah I signed up for my own health reasons (a doctor tried to prescribe me antidepressants because I was showing signs of depression). That was in 2005 and I healed myself by changing my mental perspective and eating healthier. Since I was so inspired by my own personal change I wanted to learn more about I found IIN doing some reasearch and signed up. At the time classes were live. They are no longer live, the courses are online however there are events a few times a year for students of IIN (current and Alum). I atteneded the live classes and loved them! I just loved being surrounded by others with similar interests, I loved being surrounded by individuals you were so grounded in their truth (I was figuring out my own truth at the time), I loved the teachers and seeing them live and I loved the bags we received every weekend filled with books, kitchen utensils, foods and other health related items. Since they push health coaching (because that is what they do) I got caught up in that thinking and thought I could be a health coach, which was a big fail…but in a wonderful way! I do feel that there wasn’t enough to prepare someone for health coaching. They demonstrated sessions on stage, passed out DVD’s of recorded sessions, and encouraged that we practice with one another. Also I am not fan of their info for setting up your business/coaching practice. A part of this is my background as a finance professional I have a lot more detailed understanding of how to set up a business and their tips/tools are very general and do nothing to promote authenticity. As for certification I did the bare minimum with regards to coaching clients and the tests I found were very easy. I read my books and reviewed my notes but nothing I was spending hours trying to memorize info. Of course I feel when you are genuinely interested in a subject you just soak up the info easily.Although I am not a practicing health coach I have incorporated a lot of what I leared at IIN into my own live and have helped a few friends make some changes. I even continued my studies by becoming certified in Food Therapy and have even studied at the The Psychology of Eating Institute. I do feel that if you have a genuine interest in eating healthy it is something that you can learn from reading and doing your own research as I feel I gained lots more knowledge from studying Food Therapy and the psychology of eating. But of course I think it is important to follow your heart and do what is right for me. I am grateful for IIN because at the time and where I was in my life I definitely needed it. Good Luck!

Hi Jeanette …I am about to start this course tomorrow. I am not sure what I will do after the year…but am excited about the journey it will take me on. I like the idea of being a health coach but also understand what you were saying and the limitations of the course. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jeanette
I’m thinking of taking the Psychology of Eating Coach training – is this what you did? Would love to hear any feedback you have on the programme.
Thanks so much

A few typos in my last post. Find it very difficult to move my cursor around in the comment box as it keeps getting stuck!
In the last sentence I meant to say “do what is right for you”. Not me!

Sarah,
thanks for the post. I’m doing strength and cardio training at the moment, so trying to be carb free wasn’t working, I was getting tired and grumpy. It was good to read that we all need diets that suit our lifestyle, level of activity, age and sex. It was so obvious… but nice to read that I’m doing the right thing by my body.
I didn’t train yesterday and paid attention to what my body needed… I ate about half of what i normally do and felt fine. It’s interesting what you learn when you are concious about your body.
I think I’ll give the course a go for my own learning.

I know I shouldn’t as this but have you had fillers in your lips? I know it is very unlikely but they look quite puffy in this video and I wondered if there was a reason (allergic reaction / lip balm / etc). Maybe you just naturally look like Angelina here

Thanks so much Sarah. I have a blog and have wanted to study nutrition for AGES. I am a Pilates Instructor and want to do a course to help myself and my clients however I can’t even see me practicing only as a nutritionist considering I am juggling 150 clients! Maybe this is a better course for me

Hi everyone, I am interested in doing this course as well. I have started reading their program guide and also the free downloadable book on Integrative Nutrition. One thing that struck me (and to be honest started to annoy me) about the book is that it talks about the US situation all the time. I started wondering if that would also be the case with the course, is the theory and contents based on and about the US situation? Being an international student (a Dutchy Down Under
that would not be of much interest to me. I had a chat with someone from the Institute about it and she did not give me a straight answer. I just want to make sure this is the right thing for me.
Thanks!

Hi there,
Very interesting to read everyone’s comments. I am trained as a Naturopath and a life and business coach. After years of study and many qualifications, I find that getting into the business and making a success of that a whole new ball game. The thing that I have found works really well is partnering with others, with a proven system and training/personal development/mentoring as part of that system.
Since connecting with this my business has changed, with much more freedom, improved finances and a whole lot of FUN!
It’s tough out there trying to set up a complete system, website, customer service, etc etc. I know because I tried it for many years.
Creating a residual income has never been so simple. Of course you must be open to learn, be coached, and of course do the work, step up…or sometimes out of your comfort zone. Having said all that it is THE Most rewarding thing I have ever done. I love helping others do the same, because I know how difficult it is alone.
