a competition for all you bloggers out there

Posted on June 5th, 2012

Dear Fellow Bloggers Who Read This Blog,

I did a call out a while ago for anyone who’d bought the I Quit Sugar Cookbook to make some recipes from the book and then share them with the #I Quit Sugar community on twitter and facebook, and Instagram. Bloody well done to those of you who gave it a crack. I’ve had some….cracker entries sent my way. I’m very grateful and so I’ve decided to turn the idea into a little competition! With prizes!

an Instagram share – from Lizzieloves

If you’d like to be involved, here’s how:

  • Buy my I Quit Sugar Cookbook (if you don’t already have it) and make one – or more! – of the recipes. Take a snap or two, and share the results with your readers on your blog.
  • Give us the link to your post. You can simply copy it into the comments section below, or – better -  share it on Facebook and tag the IQS facebook page in your post.
  • We’ll then pick the three most dynamic, creative, pretty posts…

And three bloggers will get 3 x I Quit Sugar Cookbooks to give away to their readers

We’ll choose three winners by June 17. Winners will be announced on my blog Tuesday June 19. Be sure to check in and see the winning results.

Lucy in the Larder shared my coco nutty granola recipe on her blog the other day – so if you’re looking for inspiration on how to do this, check it out here.

If you haven’t got your copy yet, simply click on the button below.

I’m looking forward to seeing what you create! P.S. If you ‘like’ the IQS facebook page at the moment, there’s also 5 x Loving Earth packs to be won, worth $20 each.

  • This has to be the worst giveaway I have ever seen. You want bloggers to pay for the CHANCE to giveaway your books. You then want them to put in the time and energy to write, cook and blog about one of your recipes and promote you for free and then they might win 3 copies of your book. Hilarious!

How can you ask bloggers to to buy your book cook and promote it al for free???
Are you for real!! Seriously is this a joke or what? No one in their right mind is gonna do this i for one think it’s rather funny and a blatant push to get more buys for your book.
Good Luck if you get them or even 1 blogger to to do this for you for free pft
I have seen some shonky giveaways but this has to take the cake ~ I am still laughing !

In the cookbook it’s called Cashew Chia Pudding and it’s in the dishes in cups section, or something like that I can’t remember the exact wording!

Hi Fiona and Dannie, I’m sorry this post doesn’t appeal to you. Not all will to all beings. I think you’ve missed the gesture behind this. I’ve been sent so many images and blog links featuring dishes people have cooked from my ebook and I wanted to find a way to reward everyone’s efforts.
I reckon the idea of giving $60 worth of product to readers to giveaway isn’t that silly.I’m not sure if you blog – having stuff to give to your readers is a boon. Yeah, it promotes my book at the same time, but it’s not like I’m asking anyone to say something false about the book. This is the spirit of blogging, I feel. You like something, you pass it on. I’m continuing the chain and giving readers the chance to pass on some love to THEIR readers. On top of this, I’m featuring the winner’s blogs on my site…If you’re a small-time blogger, I reckon this could appeal. It did when I was first starting out.
Clearly I can’t give out books to everyone. A “competition” felt the best way to do it.
    Hope this makes sense.

    [Reply]

    Fiona Reply:

It’s the fact that yo’re asking us as bloggers to PAY you $19 to have the chance to maybe possibly give away $57 of your products, after we’ve promoted you the first time.

Sure, if you already have the book you might want to go ahead with it. But given the amount of talk there’s been lately of valuing yourself and your blogging space, I found it an odd way to promote it.

So, yes, I’d say promote it as an opportunity for people who are already owning the book to have a chance to give it away to their readers, but to think that bloggers would buy the book in order to enter the competition?

    [Reply]

    Dannie Reply:

Thank you Fiona :-) You said exactly what i was thinking well said! x

    [Reply]

    Sarah Wilson Reply:

Thank you for your thoughts. I’m sad you choose to see it in that light and not as a transparent invite (of course it entails buying the book/having bought the book at some stage…I’ve just spelled it out rather than hiding behind spin). I hope your mirth doesn’t put others off the opportunity.

    Bridget Reply:

    Fiona (and Dannie) –

We read exactly the same post and before reading all of these comments, I interpreted the competition as something to get involved with on a ‘community’ kind of level, for those interested in the IQS content on this blog.

I think you might have missed the point of the competition. Sure, if you define it in monetary terms, having $57 worth of product to give away to your readers isn’t brilliant. However, if you ‘won’, you’d be featured on Sarah’s blog which might lead to better opportunities down the line than say a $200 cash prize.

If you already owned the book, or were planning on buying it anyway, it might be a fun competition to get involved with. If you had no interest in buying the book, or if your blog audience was the polar opposite of Sarah’s, you’d probably see no point. And I’d assume you would just move on.

I don’t blog but I work in a industry where working for free is essential when you’re on the way up, so I can sympathise with your frustration. But, all the hard work does lead somewhere. AND, becoming involved with people who have already ‘arrived’ is one of the best ways to make connections and move forwards yourself.

Anyway, it’s easy to become frustrated when you feel like someone is trying to take advantage of you – I’ve been there – but really, I don’t think that was Sarah’s intention, directly or indirectly.

    x

I love this blog and I love Sarah’s want to share and inspire the people around her through it! Clearly some people can’t see this offer as as something that appeals to them. Why be negative and try and put some one down. The people that want to get involved and join in the spirit of it will and those that don’t, well….. Don’t! Why not go and find something constructive to do with you time.

fiona, dannie, naomi, i’ve already got the ebook too, but i don’t blog or facebook or tweet so i don’t think i’ll be partaking in this one … big deal, its an opportunity for others and in my view it will be a great opportunity for some – a little project with a prize that can be passed on, and on …. sharing creativity and positivity.
what do you guys add to the world … or this post?

didnt your mother/anyone ever tell you guys if you haven’t got something nice or constructive to say, then don’t say anything at all?

i must say i am getting seriously fed up with the attitude that seems to pervade society these days, not directing this to anyone here in particular, but why are we all so quick to judge, assume and criticize others when surely most of us have the common sense to know that we don’t know what is really going on in anyone else’s mind/life or why they make the decisions they do etc etc. and does it really matter to us? i am constantly confounded by the judgements we make on others. the rubbish that we call “news” encourages this type of thinking. it is NOT mindfulness, it is NOT compassionate and it adds nothing of value to any of our lives. when are we gonna wake up? it causes suffering, and surely if we really think about it, is that our intention? is that what we’re trying to achieve? i’m sure you guys didn’t MEAN to sound so nasty? we should all think more before we make our opinion aloud. i am working on it myself, i wish a few more of us would, twould make it all a bit easier.

    i love your comment jessica!

sarah maybe this could be an idea for future post material? how the media & reality tv encourages us to judge, criticize and assume … the suffering and negative fallout that comes from this … ?

i hope today’s post bring positive outcomes for you sarah, and other bloggers/readers of you fantastic blog. after all, it’s not doing ME any harm now is it?!

oh one more thing, sarah, i listened to your interview with problogger … respect dudette!! … very interesting and inspiring to hear your honesty and openness, thank you for sharing so generously with us all.
there are not many like you out there willing to speak so straightforwardly about their own business. it certainly came across to me that you put in an enormous amount of hard work, thought and time as well as the more evident heart and soul that makes up your blog.
i sometimes forget with successful, intelligent people that its not just intelligence that gets them to where they are, it’s bloody hard work, discipline, commitment and a positive outlook.
wishing you continues success, good health & determination babe.

It was meant to be constructive in that I feel that asking people to pay you to promote your book is exactly the same attitude most bloggers are facing from PR companies at the moment, “oh it’s a privilege for you to write about x” … such as when one blogger was asked to send back a pack of bandaids because she didn’t want to write about them. Hilarity ensues.

    [Reply]

    Hannah Reply:

I have usually defended Sarah (i.e. when people said she was charging too much for her very reasonably priced book) but I have to agree here. The fact is that bloggers are being expected to promote stuff practically for free and competitions like this really hit a nerve.

I don’t think Sarah meant to take advantage here. I just think that people forget that making an income from blogging is hard and made harder when people think that every little $25 prize that comes one’s way make up for using one’s influence to sell a product.

    [Reply]

    Fiona Reply:

    Thanks Hannah.

    Sarah Wilson Reply:

Fiona, the PR comment is a valid one. I guess the difference here is I’m not sending something to you, replete with glitter and shredded paper, that you’re lumped with (and have to get rid of or send back) and I’m not haranguing you to write something about it…and demanding a reply… for the price of a pack of BandAids (is that seriously true!? ACtually, why am i surprised?). It’s just a genuine offer for those interested.

    [Reply]

    Bridget Reply:

Fiona surely they are two entirely different things.

To my mind, getting involved in a little competition run by another blogger which might expand your network and your readership is completely different to being asked by a multinational corporation to drop their product into a blogpost, for (by the sounds of it) a little bit of money.

More broadly, if you’re not into their product, why not tell the PR companies to go **** themselves? Or is the issue that you’re forced to write about it because you have no other stream of income and something’s better than nothing? (Genuinely interested – not taking the piss)

I’m not sure what the fuss is, but then again I don’t blog so I may have missed the point of people’s objections?

I see no problem, seems like a win win situation (although slightly more win for Sarah). Hardcore fans of SW probably have blogs with similar themes to hers and therefore the prize of the e-book would be suitable and may increase their readership. This comp will really appeal only to those who have already bought the book and are big fans, I can’t imagine bloggers who are not interested will buy it just so they can give it away.

Happy to hear thoughts, its an interesting discussion and may be a good future blog post for Sarah. I think I remember way in the past Sarah feeling conflicted about advertising or being sent items for competitions due to the potential conflict it raises, but there are probably ways she mitigates the risk to her credibility (only promoting products she loves for example). Certainly the tone of the blog has changed over the years, which is to be expected. I imagine Sarah never thought she could even make money out of it when she began!

Fiona, she’s asking for more insight into why this competition is causing this reaction. Not everyone is a blogger (gasp) and couldn’t possibly know how common this problem is. Why not just explain it to her?

Erin, it’s just a crappy competition as the only real winner here is Sarah. (Sorry Sarah!) I could buy the book, put all the work into writing a post and then MAYBE I could win something for my readers. Maybe. They are asking bloggers to do the hard work and market the book for them with no real benefit to the readers.

When you start blogging and start building an audience, you being to get these sort of requests and it gets a bit frustrating after a while. I think a lot of bloggers want to work in a way that is beneficial to both their readers, brands and themselves. Something like this isn’t in the spirit of recognising the hard work bloggers put into writing and building a relationship with their readers.

A GOOD way to go about a competition would be to give a blogger a copy of the book to review, and then have the blogger run a competition for their readers to win a copy.

Anyway this seems more like a misdirected attempt at getting people involved more than anything. Is it a bad competition? Yes. Is it really a big deal? No. If you don’t like it, don’t enter. I suspect that many won’t.

This hits the nail on the head. I don’t think it was meant to take advantage…but it does. I don’t think Sarah was at all cynical in her approach but it just reflects the fact that people who blog who already have a presence that people value forget that other bloggers are getting people to value their influence.

    Sarah Wilson Reply:

Golly! Seriously this is not a request for anything. I’m giving away 9 books to people who buy/who have bought the book anyway….as a mark of gratitude…a bunch of bloggers have already posted wonderful recipes and posts and I’m inviting them to send it in to me…to get recognised.. Plus I’m going to plug their blog to a like-minded crowd.
THEN, I’m offering the competition to people who haven’t already bought the book, so no one feels left out. Cool?

    June 5th, 2012 at 12:47
  • This one time I wrote this thing called “I Dare You” where I challenged bloggers to value their space, their time, their talent and their awesomeness and not do things for free. This is what I was talking about. Particularly given that bloggers get offered valuable product to do giveaways all the time. Products that they don’t have to pay for. For me, I get offered enough stuff that I usually have a $150 minimum on any giveaways that I run on my blog.

Sure some people will be really passionate about this and have already bought the book and for them I’m sure it would be something that they will take up. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Although I think you could be doing more to help them value themselves that they are not paying for the chance to promote you. But business is business and it might be a great marketing strategy for you.

But I’m pretty sure this could have been pitched in a way that wasn’t quite so offensive.

But I’m pretty sure this could have been done

Sarah is in the business of making money (shit who doesn’t want that!) so what’s the issue? If you don’t like the offer or don’t agree with her idea, than don’t say anything. What do you expect to get? A trip to NY? If you think outside the box or not always expect to get something in return, then you may understand the concept of her offer. Why do some see it as a crime to make money from a blog?? It’s very difficult to earn money from a blog and if you succeed, it is not only a reflection of the time and effort that is put in, but an indication that you are doing it for the right reasons.

To be honest, this competition isn’t the best idea as you are essentially paying $19 to enter but no one is getting ripped off.

Blogs don’t pay for themselves so you really should be grateful for the FREE information that’s been fed to you every week.

I don’t think anyone is begrudging people making money from their blogs. In actual fact the whole gripe people have is that the competitions asks bloggers to pay for the book, cook a recipe and then use their influence to promote Sarah’s book in exchange for three free eBooks. It is, in essence, asking people to devalue their influence in the case of some bloggers who may have 500 or 5000 pageviews a day. Most of the people taking issue with it, myself included, are huge proponents of blogs as a income generation tool.

Oh gosh… I don’t understand why people are getting so irate about this!

This is how I see it -
Sarah is not forcing anyone to partake.
Bloggers who had already read her book and enjoyed it were sending her blog posts of them trying the recipes.
She wanted to reward them as a thank you but there were too many to reward everyone.
So she made it into a harmless little competition.
(Not to mention that she advertised it on her blog, to her readers, most of whom already have the book.)

If you’re not into it, don’t do it.

ok after researching, i am considering quitting sugar. But before i buy the book, please let me know what i am getting myself into. Do substances such as fruit, honey, golden syrup and easily digestible carbs (transformation to sugars) such as potatoes count as ‘sugar’?

    [Reply]

    Amy Reply:

    Hi wendy,

I thought i would reply for you as no one had yet. I gave sugar the flick 6 months ago after purchasing Sarah’s ‘I quit sugar book’ and reading David Gillespi’s ‘sweet poison’. I’m certainly no expert on the matter but i can vouch for how amazing i feel since giving it away. The first few weeks were hard, but oh so worth it! You realise when going through the process how addictive the substance is, which really cemented my belief in the choice to get rid of sugar was the right one. Once you purchase sarah’s book you will gain an understanding of the problem which is fructose, substances like honey and golden syrup (also agave) among others are very high in fructose. Carbohydrates such as potatoes are fine, it would be a personal choice as to how much you wanted to have in your diet. I should also note it is only in the 8 week ‘quit plan’ that Sarah advises having absolutely NO sugar, once you rid the addiction having the odd yoghurt or piece of fruit is fine. And i found you learn to understand your body better. When you are truly hungry and when you aren’t. I don’t get that 3pm slump in the afternoon anymore when i would reach for the first sugar coated ‘anything’ to keep me going. I hope that helps you decide :)

Sounds like a great comp for small-time bloggers like me. Just wanted to check: assuming it is ok to post your recipe on the blog post?

Thanks Jo! I’ve been making things from the book since I got it and I’m not usually one for making recipes from books, even though I have a few cookbooks but they mainly just sit on the shelf! But everything I have made from Sarah’s so far has been so good and I love that they are simple and minimal.

On a side note my phone has been going off all night (notification emails from this blog) started at dinner and it’s still going hahaha at one point my husband goes – Is that Sarah Wilson again? LOL I should really stop clicking on the get all comments.

Can someone tell me if I need to be worried about coconut oil and milk is I have had high cholesterol? I got it down and don’t want it to go back up. I’m a vegetarian anyway and have cut out almost all animal fats. Been on I Quit Sugar for a couple of months and eating more coconut product as part of this. I haven’t been back to my doctor to have cholesterol checked. Should I be concerned?? I love the IQS program so far, but don’t want to be jeopardizing my health is some other way?!

    Susan Reply:

    Hi Allie,
Eating coconut oil and coconut milk will improve your health rather than jeopardise it. Doctors will automatically tell you to eat low fat to reduce your cholesterol – sadly most doctors/GP’s are not trained as nutritionists. I think it’s very important for every individual to read up and spend time with a wellness coach/holistic or integrative practitioner to learn about their body and things like what cholesterol really means.

Cholesterol is absolutely necessary in our diets. Cholesterol is a vital, natural occurring substance in the human body. It produces a series of stress-combating hormones, is found in the white matter of the brain and adrenal glands and is an important part of electrolyte balance and healthy brain function. Coconut oil is shown to actually increase your HDL – your good cholesterol.

If your LDL – bad cholesterol which mainly accumulates from hydrogenated and processed fats then that is something you would want to lower, by cutting out the crap in your diet and increasing your healthy fats – coconut oil being one of them!

    happy days

Couldn’t agree more with Susan. Dietary cholesterol intake will NOT cause arterial cholesterol, if anything a higher fat diet has a positive effect.

As a vegetarian I am not sure if the low-carb part of the last link is applicable to you, but it is at least proof that cholesterol intake can positively affect good cholesterol.

I’m 100% behind this giveaway – it gives new bloggers such as myself a fab chance of getting our names/blogs out there. I know my readers would be stoked to have a free cope of her book :-)

The first is the haloumi and apple snack. I add a little butter to the apples now too. Yum. http://eatyourfreakingvegetables.blogspot.com.au/2012/06/haloumi-apple.html

And, I also made the pumpkin pie for my sisters birthday the other day. We all loved it!

  • To be honest – as a few people have pointed out, I think Sarah’s intentions are honest and well meaning. A platform to provide other talented bloggers to make headspace in a blogosphere that is saturated with people waxing lyrical on a bunch of amazing topics. Creating cut through is hard and Sarah is providing a mechanism for us to share our creativity.

As Melissa stated- we were so excited to be part of the competition – that we joined forces.

We hope you enjoy our entry as much as we enjoyed making it.
