Hello! I’m back.

Posted on July 16th, 2012

I’ve been offline (off blog, off emails, off Facebook and Twitter and just posting via Instagram) for four glorious weeks and I feel FRESH.

I asked Jo to choose a nice photo for this post…she opted for this. Here, I’m off horse trekking in the Alpujarras in my Qantas-issue pyjamas

I have energy, I have new ideas, I’m fired up about life.  I tell you, just getting off a computer adds years to your life. And not knowing what’s happening in your microcosm via constant iPhone pinging is like an injection of Vitamin B in the bum.

While I’ve been away Jo has been posting some pre-written bits and pieces and generally running The Show. She’s better than me at The Show much of the time. Anyway, that’s why there’s not been a yawning vacuum for a month.

Since early June I’ve been in Europe wandering. I’ve got a better idea of why and for how long and where next….but more later. For now just a little video I made tonight in my hotel room.

And apologies it’s split in two…tech issues. But you’ll get the gist.

PS You might have noticed the hotel room? I’ll write more about it in another post, but it’s The New Hotel, open less than a year (the place is everything a hotel should be…wait ’till you hear the story behind it…). I’d asked one of the staff – Natasa – for some rustic, authentic food recommendations. I’d wanted to go to the market that day. That was My Plan. And as “opportunity” would have it, she insisted on taking me to lunch at a place that she felt was one of the best in Athens. My Plan had to unravel. Opportunity had presented. Lo. Behold. Her boss joined us. And such was the funness of our lunch, he had me upgraded to the penthouse.

This is Natasa from The New Hotel and she shares my enthusiasm for sardines!

PS It’s nice to be back. Yay to life!

  • So I’m sitting there like the proverbial troll under her proverbial bridge…grump, grump, grump…weighed down by a massive restoration…muttering ‘bloody house, bloody architect, bloody builder, bloody dogs, bloody breakfast’…when I see this with its beaming faces and plump sardines and Quaintarse jarmies, and I SMILE!!! For which, many Monday morning thank yous. And welcome back.

  • Welcome home! We missed you but on the other hand, totally understand how you feel. Last year I drove from Brisbane to Darwin for a charity rally & I didn’t have mobile or Internet for 10 days…I had never felt so liberated & free since the Internet & Facebook took over our lives! I’m now about to embark on a 7 week trip to Europe & I can’t wait to find & feel that freedom again!!

  • Hi Sarah! Life sounds very exciting for you right now, and I love the idea of switching the tech off (and getting a metaphorical vitamin shot to the bum!!!).
Just wanted to say that I was actually lucky enough to win a copy of your latest cookbook from the lovely Jessica Nazarali’s website (who just commented above – lovely blog, little co-inky-dink!) and wanted to say that it was awesome and I’m loving it. Just wanted to let you know and share some Monday lovin’!

Fantastic post Sarah – and you look so rested and relaxed. I had three weeks in Spain in April /May celebrating a good fiend’s 40th birthday. We had indulgence and relaxation, culture and girls gossip and I came home feeling so relaxed. I just love the Spansh lifestyle. Used to live in Greece – in Crete – many many years ago (mid 90s when I was 23) and its another wonderful country to unwind and generally ‘be yourself’ in

Keep enjoying your wandering and grabbing those opportunities. The chance to do this doesn’t happen all the time, so much the most of it when it does.

I look forward to more posts, but not too many – keep a bit of offline time for yourself!

Bon voyage, happy and safe travels…

Your tech-lessness has inspired me… I think it’s something I need to do too. It feels like being “online” invigorates me but I think it is actually draining me, esp the constantly “checking” part. A habit I need to break!

All the best for the rest of your travels Sarah.

Sarah you look so beautiful and alive. It is very inspiring that someone with Hashimoto’s can be so full of energy. When you were talking about hiking I was amazed. I can barely walk to the kitchen right now. You give me hope for the future.

    Sarah Wilson Reply:

Tammy, thank you. And take heart. It’s taken me a while to get the energy…four years of trying different ways of eating and living. And I have to say the travel and sun and food and CHANGE has really helped. I have crap days here. But I’m choosing to live. I truly give you hope and courage. Be patient. The disease is doing its thing.

    Sarah,

Welcome Back! You look very refreshed, and seem to have lost a lot of weight, I can see bones across your chest… is this a result of your sugar free diet? Are you balancing back to where your weight used to be? I hope you don’t mind me asking, but it’s been playing on my mind…

You are so right, indeed. :) The thing that struck me from your videos (probably because it is a thing I am struggling with at the moment) is that deliberately surrendering control is only half the battle. It is one thing to steer your ship west on a whim… it is quite another to commit so fully, without questioning yourself endlessly afterwards.

Your video was lovely, you look very healthy and refreshed, you must be having a wonderful time! Would you consider dialing back the social media on a more permanent basis? I suppose that would make one’s media career slightly more difficult. Interesting thought, though. :)

And I’m not sure why, but this seems to make sense, to post a Leunig poem here.

    ‘Come sit down beside me,’
    I said to myself,
And although it doesn’t make sense,
    I held my own hand
As a small sign of trust
And together I sat on the fence.
    - Leunig

Look forward to the rest of your adventures! xx

    Hi Sarah,

You look positively radiant in your videos and I am in admiration of your ability to travel solo and make real connections with people.

I am in the midst of considering a very unplanned trip to Spain and would love to know more about the farm you stayed on in Andalucia, WWOOFing has been something I’ve been aspiring to do for a very long time and this may well be the kick in the pants I need to do it.

    Stay safe and vibrant

Thanks Sarah, I’ve just come into my 7th week sugar free following your plan and feel 100% different. Better different. My kids and husband are happier because I’m calmer and more content, as a result I am starting to ‘try’ and go with the flow. It’s hard, but I’m trying. Thank you for all you have shared and I hope you continue to do so. Xx
