why coconut oil makes you lose weight

Posted on November 20th, 2012

Someone has asked me how coconut oil helps you lose weight. Good question. I had to think about it for a bit. In the meantime, I ate some more of the stuff in dishes like my raspberry ripple recipe.

My raspberry ripple, which Veronika M has turned into raspberry ripe crackles! Instructions below…

Anecdotally, according to a survey of one, I know it works. I eat about 2 tablespoons of coconut oil – straight from the jar, or in a sugar-free chocolaty dish like the one above – most days after lunch. And I’ve lost weight from doing so.

If you want to read more anecdotes about weight loss from eating coconut check out these forums.

How does it work? Again, anecdotally, I believe it’s because coconut oil:

a) kills sugar cravings, immediately (I don’t go reaching for more food, especially sweet food, after lunch).

b) fills you up, immediately. After 2 tablespoons I’m not hungry for about four hours. A rare state of being for me.

c) does something else…I’m not sure what…but it certainly seems to speed up metabolism.

I wanted to learn more myself about why this is so, and, so, did some research. I like dot-points, so allow me to present my findings as a series of bulletted factoids and findings:

For more coconut oil recipes like the one above, you might like to download my I Quit Sugar Cookbook.

The saturated fat deal

* Know this: saturated fats, overall, help you lose weight. Coconut oil is a saturated fat. To fatten a pig, farmers feed them polyunsaturated fats (primarily soybean and corn oil). To produce a leaner pork? The Department of Animal Science of North Carolina State University advises you stop feeding them polyunsaturated oils and start feeding them saturated fats. Can you see the picture forming?

* Consider this: we eat less saturated fat then ever before, but we’re the fattest we’ve ever been. Perhaps there’s a connection here?

* Saturated fats are required to absorb nutrients. Four vitamins—A, D, E, and K—are soluble in fat only. We need fat to be nourished fully and to ensure our metabolisms are running correctly.

* Saturated fats promote conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Which in turn promotes weight loss.

But why coconut oil specifically?

* Medium-chain fatty acids or medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) lead to weight loss. Coconut oil is nature’s richest source of MCTs. Most plant oils are made up of longer chain fat triglycerides (LCTs). LCTs are typically stored in the body as fat;  MCTs are transported directly to the liver, promoting “thermogenesis” which increases the body’s metabolism. There are a stack of studies that have shown this to be the case, like this one. This study shows eating 2 tablespoons of coconut oil with a meal caused body temperature to rise, boosting metabolism.

* MCTs are not easily converted into stored triglycerides and cannot be readily used by the body to make larger fat molecules. Want to learn more, click here.

* Plus coconut oil’s MCTs are a primary fuel source for intestinal cells, aiding digestion overall.

* Coconut oil’s MCTs are most similar to human breast milk. And have similar healing and metabolic properties.

How to eat coconut oil

I could go on. Others have and you might like to scour the net yourself and look at all the research on the topic. Or you might like to try just eating the stuff.

* Try it on its own. A tablespoon or two straight from the jar after a meal.

* By making my coconutty granola

* Making my raspberry ripe

* Cook some pumpkin in it, sprinkled with salt.

* And here are 19 other very clever things to do with coconut oil

Tell me, have you had any joy losing weight with coconut oil…share your thoughts here so others can get a feel for things…

  • Great post. I am totally in love with coconut oil since reading about it – on your site. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy to get hold of in the UK {unless you want to pay an absolute fortune for it}. I can’t say that I’ve lost weight using the oil but it does make me feel better. Cooking with it means everything feels less greasy and a little goes a LONG way!

  • Yes, much joy! Using coconut oil in my food and on my body has not only made my skin feel softer and look brighter, but the combination of ingesting coconut oil, whole-fat dairy, good clean meats and vegetables and no wheat/sugar = a much slimmer and trimmer physique! Such a lovely thing to do good things for yourself that actually feels and tastes good, too!

Probably as good a place as any to ask this…

I started introducing it to my diet after purchasing the I Quit Sugar ebook. My body reacted terribly to it. Basically some nausea and then…..running to the toilet and (TMI – not vomiting). So much so that I worry about maintaining normal hydration levels.

Not sure if there is an adjustment period to using it or not? Or if I should ease into it a bit slower? Sorry for the TMI :(

Coconut oil is nature’s most effective killer of candida yeast. The yeast die off can make you nauseous or spacey. I certainly experienced both when I first started to cook with it because i had serious candida issues but it didn’t last too long. It is a truly wonderous food. I would definitely persevere with it.

    [Reply]

    Laurie Reply:

thanks for replying to my plea for help! it may be that. I think i might try and just introduce more coconut products a bit slower and see how I go. Running to the toilet and having very liquid BM every day for a week was not fun! It might just be that it isnt for me but going from no coconut products to HEAPS probably just threw my body off its game a bit.

    Mia Bluegirl Reply:

Or you could just be sensitive/ allergic to it. “Persevering” with coconut oil ended up with me feeling sick a lot and then becoming MORE sensitive to it, not less. I can’t even eat Thai curries any more without a reaction, which is irritating, as I used to eat curries regularly. People have reactions to every food under the sun, even their own tears and breast milk. Bodies are weird. Sometimes there isn’t a reason.

My guess is that if your body is reacting so violently to coconut oil, it isnt a good idea to keep eating it? Would you keep feeding your child something that made them that sick? But you know your disgestive system, so it’s really up to you. Good luck, though.

    [Reply]

    carmel Reply:

You’re right Mia. I wouldn’t persevere with the coconut oil if it was making you really sick. I guess that was a stupid piece of advice. Apologies. All I was trying to say was that it could just be yeast die off causing the nausea and it might take a few goes to get this under control.

Then again it could be something else. So much guess work with gut issues I find. That’s the truly frustrating part.

I have heard other people say green tea makes them unwell after a period of fasting. I wonder why. At a guess, I could suggest that both have thermogenic effects and increase the metabolism, and perhaps not everyone responds well to this? Then again the same people sometimes respond just fine to coffee, so maybe not.

I’d be fascinated to hear of any further research into this. I am curious as to how dietary thermogenesis affects someone with thyroid disease, also.

Coconut oil smells sweet and doesn’t have a strong taste. It is good to cook with as it can be heated without burning.

  • Thank you Sarah!! Very, very interesting stuff!! As a bit of an Ayurveda head I tend to eat more ghee than coconut oil. I’ve tried to look into MCTs and ghee but can’t find much info apart from buffalo ghee appears to contain MCTs but cow ghee doesn’t so much. Have you come across anything in your reading?

From an Ayurvedic perspective, coconut oil is considered Sweet, Cooling, Sweet, Heavy, decreases Vata and Pitta and increases Kapha and is Sattvic or promotes a peaceful mind. It is used a lot in massage oils during summer due to its super cooling nature. I’ve always found it a little heavier than ghee to eat (hence the ‘filled up’ feeling you’ve described… but love having it in SE Asian dishes and desserty things. But I’ll have to experiment more…

Have you gotten into ghee much? It is also Sweet, Cooling, Sweet, Light, Tridoshic (good for all constitutions), Sattvic and has the specific qualities of strengthening Agni (metabolism) and is also said to be directly nourishing to Ojas (the Ayurvedic understanding of the foundation of our immune system) so is rad for auto-immune conditions. Let me know what you think xx

    Love
    Nadia

Great post, I LOVE coconut oil. Just a question, can you get the same benefits from coconut in other forms? Or does it have to be the ‘oil’? I love shredded coconut, or coconut ‘chips’ (100% natural/organic) as a snack, and coconut milk of course.. I’m interested to know if they work for you in the same way.. thanks!

Does anyone know the nutritional difference between coconut MILK vs. OIL?

I would think eating fresh coconut (although I’m sure this is hard to come by for many of us) would be the most ideal form of beneficial coconut-iness as it’s incased in all its fibre glory!

    Any thoughts?

I’m also wondering about the whole milk versus oil thing. I live in The Netherlands and apparently, coconut oil is quite hard to come by in my town… But coconut milk you can buy in almost every supermarket. We also have little packages instead of cans :-) PS Sarah, I recently discovered your blog and it is awesome!

Sarah, hi! I live in NL too, and I buy my coconut oil in either a health-food store (reformwinkel) or at De Tuinen. At the latter, I am careful to read the labels, as they also sell what is labelled “coconut oil” but is actually for superficial use only, full of junk. There are also websites like http://purekokosolie.nl/nl/ and http://www.lekkerinmnvel.nl, which sell and deliver….

You know l tried eating coconut oil and l gained weight. I felt healthier, but fatter. So what am l doing wrong? I already eat mainly lean protein and vegetable and very little carbs, so l just can’t figure it out. A calorie is a calorie is it not?
As l don’t normally eat much fat, if l add 2 tbs of CO, per day it would mean l am taking in more calories. So l just can’t figure out how Sarah you don’t gain weight from eating CO?
How much CO do you have daily and why after lunch, l thought it was better before meals? Your daily energy intake must be very small as you are very slim. I would love to know exactly how much you eat, and exactly how much exercise you do if you would care to share again. Thanks Sue

Sue, I gained weight too. I eat pretty much the same way as you described, which is kinda low calorie, & I started eating some coconut butter every day, & noticed a weight gain in a week. That’s not what I’m looking for! It is more calories added to the diet, so I would assume that’s why. I just use the oil in cooking, as I find it’s easy to overdo it on coconut products (oil, butter, milk, chips) when eating it straight. Especially the butter, as it has a rather sweet taste that is very tempting to revisit! It would also depend on the amount of physical activity one is doing too, as the body does require & want more calories.

I’m not sure, but with added calories, maybe the body will ease off at a precipice, & the weight gain would slow & stop. But since I’m looking to lose weight, I’m a little reluctant to try that! I have read on other sites about people gaining weight from it. I’ve taken to just using it here & there, rather than every day. There are a lot of benefits that make it worthwhile in using.

When I first started to eat, drink & use Coconut oil all over, I was visiting my son in Airlie Beach Qld. I discovered “Coconol Oil of Life”. I was using that for quite some time & very happy with the results. The only reason I changed to Banaban was the price. Perhaps for those feeling discomfort, Coconol would be worth a try. At no time in all these years have I had any side affects. Couldn’t live without it! The company are local people in the Whitsundays, so it has to be perfect!

  • Hi Sarah,
I have only started experimenting with coconut oil this year and while I love it, I have found there are some things it just doesn’t go with. So I wanted to say thanks for all the wonderful tips on how to use and enjoy coconut oil. Can’t say I had thought to try just eating it off the spoon. Mostly, I have been using it in smoothies and curries. I am looking forward to experimenting some more.

Can you explain why the Livestrong website says that unsweetened coconut contains fructose? They are anti-fructose from what I can see, but how does make sense with your view of coconut? I’m eating coconut flakes all the time, so hoping I”m not consuming lots of fructose.

    Thanks.

Thank you to everyone for all the great positive stories about coconut oil, I learned a couple of things & reminded of others. In Adelaide it takes awhile for the oil to be liquid naturally. At this time we have very hot weather, it is such a joy to cover my body with the best moisturiser & sun screen after my shower each morning. Just going to make my morning shake to which I add approx 3 tbsns.of the C/oil, delicious!

Hello, I’ve just purchased my first jar of coconut oil. The brand I bought is Niugini Organics Raw 100% Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. It is produced in Papua New Guinea. It cost me $19.98 for a 650ml jar. I thought the price was reasonable. The lady in the health food shop (Qld) recommended this one & I must say it has a pleasant smell & a pleasant taste. I have bought it to take in the mornings with my breakfast or in smoothies. Has anyone else heard of or used this brand of coconut oil? Do you think ingesting it this way will be the best way to help with weight loss?

Hey Lisa, I just bought the same one yesterday from a health shop in QLD. I used it to cook pumpkin last night for a salad, and had some with salmon on rye toast for brekky this morning. I can’t wait to start noticing the health benefits I’m hearing about. How’s it going for you?

I could not read all the comments above but if someone is having syndromes like nausea and headaches it is because of the oil’s natural bacteria killing power. Since it gets rid of all that bacteria (the good and the bad) it creates a toxic effect on the body (and that’s when you get sick). The way I avoided it was to add a probiotic Acidophilus (pill or yogurt) to my routine and it was a good way to avoid unnecessary pain. Also, probiotics are great to avoid candida and good for your inmune system. :)
